no, the CPU will not be your limiting factor in 99%+ of the games out there provided you use a monitor with appropriate screen resolution for the GPU you are using.

Okay so the 3770k is about 3 years old at this point and in 6 years it'll be nine years old, looking at a current 9 year old CPU like a Q6600 it can't handle current generation high end video cards without some level of bottlenecking. Considering the rate at which graphics cards are advancing in performance with technology like PCI-E 4.0 and HBM 2.0 on the horizon an already aging chip will begin to show it's age in the future as the older technology may not be able to keep up the power of future graphics cards.

 

Also MIGHT BOTTLENECK SOMETHING- never said it will, said it might.

well... 1st gen i7 processors are already pretty much toast for high end setups at this point.

 

as well as bottlenecking is a very application sensitive topic.

 

source engine will at this point cap out on the cpu side on a high end gpu, no matter what cpu you're throwing at it.

valley benchmark will probably run a high end gpu maxed out when paired to an athlon 64.

i really commend you for trying to provide a dating for how long it'll go, but the truth is we dont know. no one can really know for sure.

 

for all we know the next generation of triple-A titles will be CPU tanks, or barely use any CPU at all.

for all we know the next generation of GPUs will be mindblowingly faster, or just an incremental increase.

 

with dev cycles going as fast as "new generation every year" or even faster in some game cases, literally anything can happen over a period like 6 years.

Yes, it will, in CPU heavy games like Witcher 3, GTA V, BF4, etc. Take a look at W3 and GTA V in this video:

 

 

There is some difference in framerate, but pay attention to frame times. The difference is huge. With 6700k frame times are much more consistent, they don't spike as with all other CPUs. Bottlenecks are sometimes tricky to detect and occur in a matter of ms and you won't see it in GPU usage, but will cause microstuttering.

Technically it's not a bottleneck. The 6700k is just a better CPU.

Yes, it's fine for most of the games, but these games I was talking about are really heavy on the CPU. Still, they are really popular games and it seems like AAA games are getting more and more CPU intensive. They don't recommend i7's now for nothing.

Also, notion of a bottleneck is not limited to having one cheap component that will limit your system 100% of the time. It can be something that occurs in a fraction of a second without you even knowing it. There are spikes because CPU couldn't cope with the calculations needed for certain frames, and so you get microstuttering. It fits into the "bottleneck" definition perfectly.

 

Bottleneck can only occur in certain situations, depending on what's gong on in the game. Witcher 3 for example is GPU-bound until you go to Novigrad, which is a big city with a lot of NPCs and objects and it crushes i5's and even some i7's.
