MS has rolled out a new insider build for fast ring, 10565; what's really interesting is the ability to activate this build using W7 or W8(.1) keys:

 

Device activation improvements: We have received a lot of feedback from Insiders on making it easier to activate Windows 10 on devices that take advantage of the free upgrade offer to genuine Windows by using existing Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 product keys. If you install this build of the Windows 10 Insider Preview on a PC and it doesn’t automatically activate, you can enter the product key from Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 used to activate the prior Windows version on the same device to activate Windows 10 by going to Settings > Update & security > Activation and selecting Change Product Key. If you do a clean install of Windows 10 by booting off the media, you can also enter the product key from prior Windows versions on qualifying devices during setup. Refer to the Insider Hub for more information on these activation improvements including requirements.

ppl buy 25 dollar keys for win 7 home off reddit and use it for win 10

 

Considering the OS is basically free, I doubt MS minds.

 

This does sound really nice. Guaranteed upgrade constantly with old key.

I hope this makes it to retail because if I want to install windows 10 for someone legally when they have a window 7/8 copy I first have to do a 7/8 install and than upgrade.

This would make it posable to install windows 10 directly if they have a valid key.

Way easier for reformating!

Might be possible? You can do it right now if you're in the Insider Programs

one thing is to do it on a insider build and quite a whole lot of other to be able to do it on a licence you from a store ;)

I really wonder if that's true... First of all, it's a free upgrade, in the first year, but it's certainly not free; they still charge new customers over $100.

Second, if they just wanted as many people on it as possible by any means necessary, I think first of all it would be truly free, and the upgrade/install/licensing processes would all have been massively changed to basically a DRM-free install.

 

I'm getting mixed messages from Microsoft because of this...

They should have just give out product keys in the first place like what they did with the free Media Center Pro Pack.

1) Not as many would if the adds are not "LOOOK FULL VOLUME VIDEO ADDS RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF YOUR SCREEN!" adds and are just like a small banner on your task bar

 

2) When you have a user base as large as Windows does, even with 80% of the people ad blocking they'd be making billions of revenue in short order: 20% of 100 milion installs it's still 20 million users, being served adds all of the time 24/7 even...that's a lot. This is also what Google does with Android basically.

Wonder if this in any way makes the free-upgraded Windows 10 transferable to another PC like retail Windows. Even if it doesn't, it would make reinstalls so much more painless, so a good change either way.

id rather die and have windows die with me before id have ads on my taskbar, explorer or whatever, and i wont accept ads in windows apps that are default to windows like photo viewer calculator etc which are essential tools, if they want some ads on the weather thing or news/food or whatever thats fine but nothing that its inside windows core.

they need to make windows free and not subscription or ad based, and if anyone disagrees and believe it costs to much to develop windows then they can make it partially open-source i think thats possible, and im very sure the huge ass windows community will fix/improve stuff for the rest

That's good. But there's still difference between OEM and retail versions, meaning OEM can only be reinstalled on it's original device while retail can be used to reinstall for new computer.

OEM keys work on any device, as long as you choose phone activation.
