Intel, It's 2015, no point in recommend and 2011 socket with a 2012 chip to go with it (which is what 6-8 cores socket uses). You'd more features and stuff with intel.

Everyone on this forum will tell you to buy an i5 because blanket statement.

AMD isn't viable without overclocking the living crap out of it and by the time you've spent all the cash to get the most out of it, an i5 rig would have been cheaper.

Im unsure which route to take for my first PC build. I know Intel has better performance per cores, but then AMD has more cores and newer games are starting to use more then 2 cores.

Could someone please tell me the pros and cons of Intel CPUs and AMD CPUs.

I feel that since you said "Low end AMD" your budget is low, So at super low budgets I think AMD has the better Price to Performance ratio but when you start spending $200 - $350 for a CPU then Intel has better performance for your money.

Just go intel, even an i3 is enough for games and gives you room to upgrade to a 4790k later on that will kill every amd chip they make. Amd is a dead brand, the technology is years old. Its all the same stuff with just little faster cpus each year. And ghz means nothing anymore. A 4.0ghz intel will beat a 5.0ghz amd chip almost all the time

Once zen comes out intel will still beat it with something new, its just life.

I think the AMD APU's have good market-share

My budget is $150 Australian dollars

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646i34160

FX-6300 is a similar price, but there's no point in getting it for gaming imo. The i3 will be a lot better in single threaded games and about the same in games optimized for many cores. Also, with the i3, you can get an i5/i7 without having to buy a new motherboard.

I've been thinking between getting an i3-4170 and upgrading to an i5 in the future. Would that be the best way to go?

No really, their newer APUs have some decent single core performance.

To get the most out of the APU he'd need to do overclocking and RAM overclocking so he's better off getting the i3.

I would go with that if you are going to get a dedicated GPU and you are gaming.

Go with the APU if you are gaming and are using the integrated GPU in the APU and you are gaming

Go with the FX 6300 if you are definitely getting a GPU right now and if you are video editing and rendering.
