How to know if your GPU is a good overclocker?

I've been seeing a lot of people saying that buying a GPU is like a lottery sale when it comes to overclocking but how does one see if the GPU is indeed a good overclocker or not?

You overclock it and see what it does. If you want to know before you buy? You can't. However some brands and certain cards are binned to perform at average with better overclocks. Like evga classified or kingpin being the highest tier.

It's called the silicon lottery it means that you may or may not get a chip that's a good overclocker. Some overclock like a champ and some don't budge. You know if yours is good by attempting an overclock, lol

Compare it to other similar cards. For example, most people can get a +100 Mhz boost on a 970. Mine can do +200.

That's true. A lot of it is luck. However, recent studies have shown that ASIC quality seems to matter on the NVidia Maxwell GPU's. As for the "how does one see if it's a good overclocker" the answer is simple. Overclock it.

Yep. Just gotta overclock it.
