What kind of programs are you looking to make?

Java, C# or anything close to C/C++ would help a lot in most, if not all, places. But something like Javascript could also help.

i dont know maybe a secure "bank" system ie you have to have an admin name and password with multiple layers of security

and you get locked out if you input a password wrong 3 times

Well that can be easily done in PHP or even Javascript, but the back end of the system just has to be secured, but that's on server end.

If you want to make a standalone program for it, you can use Java, some program with C# (like Visual Studio), or even C++ or Python.

I started with Java. Pick a language you think you will use and is popular. C++/Java/Python/HTML/etc. What do you like doing? Programs? Web design?

By the way, the best way to start learning a language is to make a program. Decide on a goal (Simple calculator or whatever) and JUST DO IT. Learning on CodeAcademy when you have no experience only leaves you uninterested. Make the program and look up how to do it. It's the way I learned.

CPU: Intel i5 4690k @ 4.3 GHz       GPU: MSI GTX 980                      Cooling: be quiet! Pure Rock                     OS: Windows 7            Monitor: BenQ XL2411Z

Motherboard: AsRock Z97 PRO4   PSU: Corsair 600W CX600M       Keyboard: Razer BlackWidow Ultimate   SSD: Intel 120GB 520   Headset: HyperX Cloud II

I suggest going for html, css, JavaScript, and PHP. Web development seems to be the future, what with the cloud becoming so huge and most apps migrating to the web. Even Windows' Modern apps are written using html, css and js.

It's also an easy-ish starting point to understanding other programming languages and gets progressively harder with each of the languages I listed.

I use a Lenovo T440: i5 4300U, 8GB RAM, 128GB Samsung 840 Evo, 14" 900p display and an external 23" 1080p passive 3D monitor. Extended 6-cell battery with internal 3-cell. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (I only use open-source software -- haven't paid for a single program yet).
