PSA: Use the 380 over 960!

RyanMacRocks

I think I speak on the behalf of everybody in the LTT forum who is tired of having to tell new system builders to get rid of their 960's and get a R9 380 instead. Now I am not even an AMD fanboy or anything, but seriously people, the number of times I've seen "Go with the 380 instead, its a better GPU for the same price."

Can we all just start going with the 380 for budget builds and not the 960? We're getting tired of saying this.. If you don't believe me look up the benchmarks yourself.

And yes, I do understand that there are cases where you want a certain nvidea feature, so I will make an exception in those cases.

Main PC: i5 4590 @ 3.5 GHz ♦ RX 480 Armor OC ♦ 16 GB DDR3 ♦ GA-Z97-HD3 ♦ 120 GB 840 EVO ♦ 120 GB Intel 520 ♦ W10 Home

Scrapyard PC: Xeon X5460 @ 3.8 GHz ♦ HD 7870 ♦ 8 GB DDR2 ♦ GA-P35-DS3L ♦ 80 GB Intel 320 ♦ 160 GB WD Caviar SE ♦ W10 Home

Unless you care about heat output/power consumption. My 960 heats up my room pretty well. I would be burning up if I got a 380. Also, I like being able to update my drivers without hassle and without restarting.

220W vs 280W - 60W is a small difference really when you consider the 980 Ti drawing 350W

How about, when we suggest a build we check what the current local prices are before blindly going with one or the other?

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Not everyone is willing to upgrade their power supplies just for a new GPU. Not speaking in terms of me; mine's totally overkill for my use.

both a 390 and 970 are fine on a 500W PSU assuming it's decent quality. I wouldn't put a 970 on a diablotek or CX expecting it to work fine

and it doesn't change the fact that a crappy PSU needs an upgrade, be it 970, 390 or a Voodoo

Still, I'd prefer a GTX 970. There are some driver issues with AMD (Couldn't work at 1080p, only 1080i...), sure, they're on the same level but with somethings like res I just said it gave me probs. Not bashing on AMD.

Really? Cause I've been using them for 5 years and I've not noticed such issues . . . - have tried 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 and 7000 series and no driver issues whatsoever.

From MY personal experience, AMD is on par with nVidia but I had some problems. It's not like everyone's system behaves the same... -.-

True - you might have gotten unlucky with a specific card or vendor.

...Sapphire, great cooling, great OC (HD 7950 Dual-X), as I said, driver problem, the card was not faulty or anything. I had to reinstall various times and I tried with an HD 7850 borrowed from a friend, same driver, same problem.

Ran at 900p all the time 'till I changed video card :P (I didn't change it for that problem, but because my brother wanted to buy a new GPU).

Hmm - very odd - I've been using HDMI for over 2 years with 6000 and 7000 series (7950 to be exact - my current one) and I never ran into that - did you also swap out the cable?

Anybody who says the 960 is inferior is only looking at half the story. Yes, performance is a big component, but for what I like, I can only use an NVIDIA card. Please look at a situation more critically. Say a drastically cheaper Nissan GTR is just as powerful as a Ferrari, then why the fuck is Ferrari still in business? Because people want what comes with a Ferrari, not just the performance.

Because I so regularly use ShadowPlay and AMD doesn't have a reliable alternative, you can NOT convince me to want an AMD card, and I probably won't ever have an AMD card until there's a reliable alternative.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.
