Hey Friends!

I've been doing some extensive research for a CPU to start a new PC build and I've narrowed it down to an i5 or i7.

I'll mainly be focusing on video editing, but might dabble in some casual games, nothing serious though.

I've come across the i5 4590 for around $190 and the i7 4690 for around $270. Is the jump from i5 to i7 really worth shelling out the extra cash for hyperthreading?

I've reviewed mixed opinions on this subject and wants to see what that LTT community has to say.

Thanks in advance!

If you're not overclocking you can go for the inbetween in price which is a Intel Xeon which is basically just a i7 with no iGPU

If you really do video work at an intensive rate, definitely must go for the i7 however i think the i5 will do just fine. Render times will be slower however you will be saving almost 100 dollars. Don't think the i5 won't be able to edit videos as well. Also depends on resolution if you're going to be editing 4k videos and even editing while playing games and multitasking the i7 is a must. I got the i7-4770k for editing myself and i have no problems running other programs and editing 4k at the same time.

Correction i5 4690 vs i7 4790.

I doubt this makes any difference though.

It can. The 4690 is great for gaming and has excellent bang for the buck. The 4790 is great at everything else and carrys a price to match. For you I'd say 4790 or Xeon.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Hyperthreading can be a very large boost in performance in video editing/rendering tasks. I'd say that, yes, the performance difference is probably in line with the price difference. An i7 or Xeon is really the best thing you can have for that kind of workload.

However.. the issue is whether or not you actually need that performance. If you're doing this semi-professionally, and making money from it, I'd definitely recommend investing in an i7 or a Xeon E3. If you're doing it casually and don't mind spending an extra few minutes waiting for your renders, the i5 would be fine. In most games, the i5 will usually be just as fast as any i7.

You could check out the Xeon E3 1231v3. It's a re-brand of the Core i7-4770. It's a bit cheaper and has most of the benefits of the i7 line, but it does lack 200 MHz versus the 4790 and has no integrated graphics processor, though.

hmm.. maybe a Xeon e3-1231 v3? which is also 8MB/ 4c/8t 3.3ghz to 3.8ghz( $240-$250) But if you really can afford the i7 4790, go for it!

no, if you are gaming you will not need the i7-4790, the xeon is just fine..

you are paying 50$ for 200 MHz

hmm?!.. I'm not sure if I follow you, hehe.. The OP mentioned this I belive:

"I'll mainly be focusing on video editing, but might dabble in some casual games, nothing serious though."

Now, I came up with the Xeon couse is basically an i7 4790 with a less clock indeed and also is somewhere between the i5 and i7 price. But as I said, if he can buy the i7 he should go for it, becouse he does video edditing which that 8mb and 8/t makes a difference between the i5-i7 while edditing, and is not only there where you can notice the difference.

i mean that if you are gaming, you get a dedicated gpu like the 260X/950 and you do not need a cpu with iGPU :) so you are saving a couple of bucks if you are not getting an iGPU :)

You mentioned video editing, and focusing. That's basically means i7 (2600K, 2700K, 3770K, 4770K 4790K). You can get Skylake 6700K or x79, x99 as well if you have the budget.
