OK SORRY IF I SEEM A LITTLE HEATED,

I got a product key for an EDUCATION edition of windows 10 from my college. I went to install it on my secondary computer for the first time, and it said the key didn't match the version of windows I'm trying to install (it's because I didn't do education edition). I started chatting with a guy, and all he did was give me the same link that I was on when I downloaded the wrong one and said it would work for sure.

Guess what. It did the same thing. (I kinda figured)

So then, this guy "Joey D", God bless him, shows me that I was downloading the wrong version and shows me how to navigate my way to the education version. I started downloading it that night, but my internet went out. I go to do it last night, and my little brother shutsdown my computer. I go to install it this morning while I'm at work, and I get an error when I choose english as my verision. (The key is still good, it just is giving me an error). They tell me to contact a microsoft technician.

I get on the line with this guy "Amit J" and he makes the situation so much worse then it needs to be. The first thing he does is asks for name, where I live, Microsoft account info, and phone number. I gave him my first name, email address, and US. I give him my case number and my error and tell him that I was trying to download windows 10 student edition and it gave me this error. I asked him if it was because I tried to download it too many times and he doesn't even answer any of my questions. All he does is take a minute to type and ask for 2 minutes to look through resources. After like 30 min of trying to tell him what is going on, he tells me to log into my office account. I go to do that and I get an error saying I don't have the correct key for the office account. I tell him that and he asks for my windows 10 student edition product code. I give it to him, reluctantly, and he tells me that the code is for windows not office.

not office.

I clicked on windows support when I came into the chat, not office. ALLLLLLRIGHTTTTT.

I then tell him that the error is for windows not office. He tells me to go to a link where he will take control of my computer so he can download a couple things.

LIKE THIS IS STRAIGHT OUT OF ONE OF THOSE INDIAN SCAM YOUTUBE VIDEOS.

I tell him no way as my steam and email were just hacked this morning (I was able to stop and recover both) and closed the chat. Like I honestly thought I was being scammed, but this is microsoft's legit website and he is a so called "tech".

I got into another chat with "Abishek T.J." and he was supposed to help me. I Gave him my case number and error code, and told me to give him a moment. That was 24 minutes ago.

If you don't want them to help you why do you ask. Remote access is as basic tech support as it gets.

Remote access is a very common tech support option.

You shouldn't have to worry about anything since you can see everything he does and can terminate with a single button at any time...

And if it really is Microsoft, they probably don't really give a damn about your Steam account :D

At least you got answers. A lot of my encounters with microsoft support were unsucessfull, they give you generic solutions for your problems, often that have no link to your issue.

you're*

Sorry, just had to.

Anyway, to reiterate what others said - let the rep do their job. Remote access is secure nowadays and is a technique used by a lot of IT and tech support professionals.

you should never bother to phone manufactuers for tech help

I find internet forums are MUCH more knowledgeable

you could easily have downloaded the iso file of win 10 education version yourself

with a quick search on google

If you need remote help fixing something on your computer

I can help over Teamviewer if you wish

just msg me on my profile

I praise the MS tech support, when one of them didnt know what to do, they were polite and asked if someone else could join the conversation that new what to do, after about 30 mins of remote access they activated my windows 10 (basically I switched my motherboard while waiting for windows 10 which causes it to never upgrade to windows 10)

I understand the OP. Having Steam and e-mail stolen will make me paranoid. Especially with the guy trying to fix what was never broken.

Give up on MS. Use Linux, if you are however locked into Windows, get help from LTT. Download the ISO the second MS guy gave you and try to proceed as normal. If you get any error, post at LTT.

I do Remote Destop Sessions all the time. If you are paranoid, post on the Microsoft Support forums instead or here on LinusTechTips. Also, what Windows 10 Student Edition? I got Windows 10 Pro (actually 8 but I could also get Business/Professional copies of vista, 7, 8.1, or 10 if I wanted to) from my University for free.

Yeah sorry.   This is a bit ridiculous.   They offered support, you refused.   I had issues with my install and let them do a remote session.  Fixed it in less than  minutes.

I am not normally a fan of off shore support but MS trains the people right.   They communicate very well and understand what they are doing.

Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly; the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly.
