Oh, it's been a while since I've created a topic......Anyways. I posted a status update recently asking if i should start a YouTube channel and out of the people who responded, they said yes. However, I have no idea what I would do differently than what Linus, TotalBiscuit, and Jesse Cox(just to name a few) have done. Any ideas on how I could potentially set myself apart from other YouTubers?

Edit: Hobbies include PCs(of course) and gaming. Perhaps I could do a concoction of different things? Gaming, reviews(of games, video cards, etc), and maybe some wacky things?

Case modding? You could put a satirical spin on reviews. Maybe LTT fourms member interactions, and guest hosting via VoIP or video conferencing?

Would be also cool to do some system ratings/reviews of users, kinda like Pimp My PC and Pimp My Setup style.

EDIT: Sorry for not just adding that as an edit, got ahead of myself..

I don't know if I would do ratings....If I do reviews, I may adopt a no-point review system that TB and Anandtech use.

Can you expand on the Member interactions section?

Goes along with the guest hosting. Invite forum members to talk about a topic that you choose. Could just be a discussion on news or current events, maybe opinions and thoughts about a certain product, hell, even interviews. Could talk about tech related hobbies (i.e. I'm heavily involved with Ingress. I have a crew of about 20 people under me, and I work with a large portion of West Michigan to collaborate on ops and training new agents. I'm more of a community person with the game, but I know the game well enough to be a threat to about anyone. It's also familiarized me with satellite phone networks as well as an extremely complex algorithm used to calculate the scoring system in the game.). I just lost the other ideas I had in regards to this, been a long day tbh...

No problem, dude. I'll follow this thread and try to remember to drop any more ideas as a reply to you.

Also, I'd edit into the first post what some of your hobbies are and such. Could always find you niche that way (kind of how JayzTwoCents is known for watercooling, Barnacules is known for 3D printing and drones, etc.)

impressionable videos seem to attract others.

related to PC/Gaming, what did you do (documented with a video) to your PC or

video settings that made an impressionable increase in performance, ease of

use or better overall experience. reviewers usually compare most recent tech

and compare to the newest tech as most of the community is still on 3 generations

ago tech and wonder if the "upgrade/update" is cost conscience or appreciable.

did you just spend $350 for a new GPU and expected 15-20 fps gain, but only can

get 5-10 fps. why, what assumption was incorrect, or is there something in the

system holding back the rest of the performance/experience?

trying to hit a major topic out of the park is non-existent (other than bendgate), but

try to see from the smaller projects and move to more expert categories.

as Linus says, keep it short (attentions span issues), layman's terms, and clear

speaking parts (mumbling, low mic settings). 4k 60fps settings are 3 years from now.

1080/30fps for stationary/low movement vids and 60fps for action vids. makes

it accessible for low band-width users or 720 for 90% of the users.

heck PC fan testing with minimal equipment to show sound versus performance

is easy enough.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind if I actually start it.

  • 4 weeks later...

Honestly I wouldn't worry so much about being too "different" and such: we literally get a thread about someone's youtube channel here every day and LTT forums is tiny.

So just do whatever you feel like it and don't be afraid to be "derivative" of someone else's videos you'll find your own voice soon enough: I consider youtube video production and henceforth an artistic endeavor and most of those always start as highly derivative of previous work, always.

Do something which is more unique; less homogenous tech channels you know what I mean.
