As a student who currently holds an "A" grade in AP calculus, doing 20 line problems and all sorts of advanced math, I find the new common core math to be confusing an convoluted... Even at the elementary level.

Does anyone have any idea what this crap is actually trying to acheive? Other than torturing our younger siblings, of course.

It was obama's attempt to reform no child left behind but he only made it worse

pretty much stuff a student should know before the end of every grade, I was introduced to it in 5th grade when the change started, all seemed the same to me.

i hate this new common core

THE SCHOOLS WAYS OF TRYING TO BRING BACK SOMETHING THAT DIED LONG AGO

LET ME DO MY MATH GOD DAMMIT!

le me in le class of le math of le algebra

Common Core:

WRITE OUT 2x+5 < 5z*9+42 IN NUMBER FORM

Regular Math:

 Solve  2x+5 < 5z*9+42

problem, common core haters?

OFF TOPIC: I suggest every poll from now on to have "**CK EA" option instead of "Other"

It seems like bullshit to me.

word-problem-in-math.jpg

its not that hard, people just get lazy ok

1) If Mary had 3 kits of bandages that would be a total of 12. 2x6=12 4x3=12

2) 2 kits of cleasner pads would be 12 in total.

3) 21x1 is equivalent to 2x6

We need to learn that becuase you don't know how many kids ask, "what numbers can be multiplied to equal 12."

That is the one thing I never got about math. You always had tk show and explain your work. If I got the answer right IT'S RIGHT, no marking it wrong because I did not show work. If you say, write the work you used to complete this problem, it makes more sense, but if I can figure it out in my head do not make me write it all out. Not worth my time.

Or it just equals 12. No need to explain WHY it equals 12, it just does.

well i can it is because they could just use a calculator and learn noting because they didn't work it out. that's what my teacher said

Uh.....asking irrelevant tack on information only confuses children or annoys them, confused children don't answer as they don't understand why the question is worded weirdly and think it is a trick, annoyed children get pissed that your wasting their time and may ignore the question entirely to spite their teachers.

I really just feel like it's dumbing down our youngins...

When they gotta go do calculus, this common core math will be a severe handicap, unless they dumb that down to, cause if basic arithmatic takes longer, imagine algebra... IMAGINE CALCULUS.

Actually. common core is not that. COMMON CORE IS THE STANDARD THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAS REACHED

its not some bullshit write out every problem shit

how would your teacher know that you actually did the work how would you teacher know that you are understanding what you are being taught. Do you play sports, whatever you practice you put it into the game. If your teacher taught you whatever it should show up in the test or homeworks that you do. But since there are some naughty kids in this world we have to show work, to show that we understand how to solve that specific kind of math.

I can't help but think this system is a little stupid.

Lets do a multiplication story for the following matrices...

Writing anything to this extent is pointless, this is why I hated math proofs as their is no logical reason to do things like this. Hopefully more students just boycott the tests.
