Ubuntu On VM VS Dual Boot

hi all ive always used windows, im interested in trying out Ubuntu, should I just install it on a virtual machine or fresh install it for dual boot?

Use a vm-machine, It is perfect for testing and learning.

I would go VM Machine, I've got OSX on my VM and its quite interesting.

thanks guys, how much ram should i dedicate to it? (keeping in mind that i am running a core i5 3570k, 8gb of kingston hyper x blue 1600mhz ram) im trying to install Ubuntu 13.04 also and i keep getting a error message that says " kernel requires a x86-64 cpu, but only detects i686 cpu???

Amount of ram depends on what you'll be doing in a VM and what you are doing with your current setup. 1gb should be enough. 

 

Can you give out exact error? and what virtualization software are you using? Seems like you're trying to install 64bit guest but guest is not configured as 64bit.

it was intel virtualization technology in bios for CPU its a setting that was disabled. Works now, thanks for ram info. Im also using Oracle VM Virtualbox.

also i have a .dmg of OSX 10.7 Lion, my VM wont mount it? how do i get it to work? does it have to be .iso ???

Just to note, I know Ubuntu 12.10 had performance issues with Virtualbox, and no amount of extra RAM fixed that. http://askubuntu.com/questions/207813/why-does-an-ubuntu-12-10-guest-in-virtualbox-run-very-very-slowly
