Kim Dotcom's "privacy company" Mega is developing secure email services to run on its entirely non-US-based server network as intense pressure from US authorities forces other providers to close.

Last week, Lavabit, which counted NSA leaker Edward Snowdon as a user, and Silent Circle both closed. Lavabit's owner, Ladar Levison, said he was shutting it down to avoid becoming "complicit in crimes against the American people".

Last week, Mega chief executive Vikram Kumar told ZDNet that the company was being asked to deliver secure email and voice services. In the wake of the closures, he expanded on his plans.

This gets around the issue of U.S. officials pressuring U.S. services for information. I wonder if the U.S. would pressure a foreign company to disclose usage, if there was reason to.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use, and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them. - Galileo Galilei

Of course they will pressure, but after all they did to Megaupload I really doubt he'll ever comply, even if his own government order him to.

I think (and hope) Kim Dotcom has learned to encrypt everything to the level that if anyone pulls servers out of the racks they are useless.

We need more of this, services that are secured and private. Once this sort of service becomes the norm it will become more and more hard to monitor everyone. While I dont think there should be anything like complete anonymity on the internet there should be privacy
