Hey there!

I'm sure this has been disqussed alot already but I wanted some up-to-date advice!

So I'm thinking about buying a pc which I'm primarily going to use to play games. I've been wondering if it would make a difference in performance if I choose to buy a i5 instead of a i7 or the other way around.

Please give me advice and tell me what you would do. :D

i5 and purchase a better GPU for a lot better gaming performance. Hyperthreading only gets utilized in games like BF4 and Witcher 3. Go with an i5 4690k because they're still pretty good (performance and value) :)

Corsair K65 | Razer Orochi | Bose QuietComfort 15 | Creative SBS A350 2.1

Games currently tend to favour better single threaded performance over multiple cores, meaning that an i7 with hyperthreading may do just as well as an i5 without in games. More importantly though, is the GPU you choose.

In some games it does, in some others it does not...usualy when it does it's in the range of 100+FPS anyways so you need very powerful GPU solution and high refresh rate monitor to be able to notice/enjoy those extra frames for the time being...it might help in the long run to have an 8 thread capable CPU though, overall i would say unless you already have a GTX 980ti in your basket, get the best GPU you can get and pair it with an unlocked core i5 such as the i5-4690K or i5-6600K...basicaly if you have ample budget and want your PC to be remain relevant longer the i7 might be a safe choice, but for most people the i5 make more sense in a gaming PC.

What games are you playing? Probably just get i5 or a Xeon.

I play games like CoD, The Witcher and stuff like that. I'm planning on buying Tom Clancy Ghost Recon Wildlands. So yea I'll be playing some big games.

No actual difference, games favor single core performance so it wont really care about the extra threads...

Yes, a comparable i7 with hyperthreading will perform better than it's i5 counterpart.

No, it wont, perhaps 1 FPS if youre really lucky...

YOu playing at 1080p? Only one card? Would you rather go cheaper? Do you overclock? Are you only gaming? I'd just get the xeon for the extra threads but i also have three monitors and do a bunch of other things while i play games.

Depends on the game.

Not in games like GTA and Witcher, there you see improvements depending on your GPU and settings. Not enough for me to throw down on a i7 over my 4690K, but the question didn't include a budget.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Yea ill be playing at 1080p, one card (R9 390), Ofc I dont mind going cheaper as long as I can play the games I want to play on a high resolution, I'm not planning on OCing, And yea I'll mostlikely use it for gaming only!

I love my little Devil's Canyon. I have it stable at 4.5GHz and along with the rest of my build it has never let me down. I run in the very low 60c at full load on the CPU with a H105 cooler. But if money was no object I would have made another choice.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Then get something like a 4460. Its great. My 970 blows every 1080p game out of the water without any issues with my 4460(obviously). With my $30 cpu cooler my build is nearly silent while it doesn't get hotter than 45c.

Doesent have anything to do with the GPU. Also, he asked why he should get an i7 over an i5 and vice versa so obviously budget is a thing.

For gaming usually mid range stuff(i5 and 970) is the best option, once you step into the high-mid range and high end, they don't give you much performance benefits for the premium you pay.

He asked if there is any actual difference that is worth it.

And "worth it" is a matter of perspective. If I had the money, it would be worth it. A year from now this topic may have a different tone, at that point my response is the correct response. That is why I forgo the immediate and answered is X>Y

All depends on the GPU, the GPU could be a MAJOR bottle neck

No, its not a matter of perspective, its not worth to pay 5000$ for a car instead of paying 1500$ for a car without anti glare coating on the windows.

Most of the time it wont make a difference in games.

If you really want to notice a difference in games, get a better GPU and pair it with a nice i5 and be happy.

The stars died for you to be here today.

A locked bathroom in the right place can make all the difference in the world.
