Which Linux distro to choose?

I wanted to get deeper into Linux for a long time and after delaying it for god knows how many times I've decided to finally to do it. The problem is, which edition to choose?

I have some experience with Ubuntu and I don't like it, used Backtrack a bit and it was ok, tried Mint and don't like that one as well. I'm not a complete beginner when it comes to Linux, but I'm not that familiar with it. A friend of mine that uses only Linux was quite annoying with Backtrack so I installed Kali since Backtrack was outdated, but I've used it maybe for 2-3 hours, and since I'm gonna do a clean Win 10 install I'll do a new Linux one as well. I noticed that many users here recommend Fedora so how does that one stack? 
I could Google all day and did some research, but I want to hear some first hand experiences. What I'm gonna use it for? Will try to completely work on it for normal daily usage (or at least max that I can), I'll leave stuff like using MS Office, Web design, gaming etc. on Win. I'm interested in digital security and programming (which I also do at uni so will do lots of that) so I'll be checking that as well. Even though Kali (Backtrack) is supposed to be best for security, I'm open to all suggestions. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Ubuntu 15.04 is amazing and so is Arch and Mint

Kali is pretty nice imo, and are designed if you want to go deeper in the "hacking" stuff.

I use Arch Linux when i use linux, pretty decent, and it has a very good wiki.

The best thing you can choose to dive into Linux without that many hassle is going with a distro that has a lot of support out there, so if something doesn't work, you can just google it and solve it seamlessly. Ubuntu is the most popular distro by far, and the easiest to troubleshoot at. You mentioned not liking it, but there are plenty of distros that are based on Ubuntu, and the fixes you can do on Ubuntu are most likely to work on those as well.

I suggest you take a look at Kubuntu, a KDE version of Ubuntu.

I use Arch Linux when i use linux, pretty decent, and it has a very good wiki.

"Hacking" is not what I'm currently interested in, more like security in general if you know what I mean. Will check Arch.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Well Linux Distros vary but they aren't going to be Windows to Mac OSX. They will all sorta have a same feel. I like Ubuntu as it has the best support

The best thing you can choose to dive into Linux without that many hassle is going with a distro that has a lot of support out there, so if something doesn't work, you can just google it and solve it seamlessly. Ubuntu is the most popular distro by far, and the easiest to troubleshoot at. You mentioned not liking it, but there are plenty of distros that are based on Ubuntu, and the fixes you can do on Ubuntu are most likely to work on those as well.

I suggest you take a look at Kubuntu, a KDE version of Ubuntu.

I understand what you mean, but since I'm not that familiar with distros don't know how complicated it is to fix issues. I know that Ubuntu is the most popular one and probably has the best support, but are others that much complicated to fix?

 

I think Debian would work the best for you. Has everything you would need. Of course it's best if you try a few of them yourself using a live USB or VMWare and see which you prefer.

Sounds like a lot of work.  :P Honestly (I'm ashamed of this), that didn't cross my mind. Will check Debian.

I wanted to get deeper into Linux for a long time and after delaying it for god knows how many times I've decided to finally to do it. The problem is, which edition to choose?

I have some experience with Ubuntu and I don't like it, used Backtrack a bit and it was ok, tried Mint and don't like that one as well. I'm not a complete beginner when it comes to Linux, but I'm not that familiar with it. A friend of mine that uses only Linux was quite annoying with Backtrack so I installed Kali since Backtrack was outdated, but I've used it maybe for 2-3 hours, and since I'm gonna do a clean Win 10 install I'll do a new Linux one as well. I noticed that many users here recommend Fedora so how does that one stack? 

I could Google all day and did some research, but I want to hear some first hand experiences. What I'm gonna use it for? Will try to completely work on it for normal daily usage (or at least max that I can), I'll leave stuff like using MS Office, Web design, gaming etc. on Win. I'm interested in digital security and programming (which I also do at uni so will do lots of that) so I'll be checking that as well. Even though Kali (Backtrack) is supposed to be best for security, I'm open to all suggestions.

"Hacking" is not what I'm currently interested in, more like security in general if you know what I mean. Will check Arch.

Kali is all about security penetration (which is basically trying to find vulnerabilities in networks)

Security wise, going with anything that isn't Ubuntu is your best bet

I'm liking CentOS but thats because of RHEL and RPM system.

Well it was mostly UI, really disliked some stuff, like the position of the close, minimize and maximize buttons, the application menu and such details. I suppose it's not what I'm used to (even though UI is something I usually don't have problems with).

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Luckily with Linux, if you don't like the way something looks, you can change it! The wonderful world of linux allows you to install multiple desktop environments such as gnome (quite dated), XFCE, Mate, Cinnamon, KDE, and many others.

Perhaps he should try Mint. It's Debian based and has a similar gui to Windows.

Most of the times when you have to fix an issue in a Ubuntu-based distro, the same solution you'd use in Ubuntu works as well. So is not that complicated as you have tons of support and help in forums.

Elementary OS, Mint Cinnamon, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Deepin, Zorin (Very Windows user friendly), Chalet (this is new to me but it looks very clean, uses xfce with a windows 7 like glassiness)

Truthfully you need to either pick one that looks good to you and just start using it, that or slowly try out the most popular ones or ones you narrowed down. I would stick to a Debian/Ubuntu base till you get more familiar  with linux in general.
