HELLLLLOOOO. I was told by my one of my girlfriends that this place is cool to brush up on TECHNOLOGY.

So I am trying to get into pc gaming and stuff. Its kinda intimidating so I am going to ask you guys for help lol. I feel like an old woman but IM TRYING TO FIX THAT <3

Okay so what is this : Intel® Core™ i7-5960X (8-cores, 20MB Cache, Overclocked up to 4.0 GHz w/ Turbo Boosts

I know. I probably should have put that into separate posts but I am very lazy lol.

8-cores : What is this AND WHY MUST I HAVE 8?!? Linus may have made a video discussing this but I would like to get multiple inputs from people.

"cache" : what is this and WHY MUST I HAVE 20MBs? Is higher the number the better?

Overclocked up to 4.0 Ghz? Ghz of what? Internet, explain dis.

Turbo boost, I think I understand this but explain anyways haha.

I AM SUPER EXCITED TO BE APART OF THIS COMMUNITY. Is it me or this hard to type on? ugh.

1: 8 cores affordable CPUs are from AMD, and their single core performance (Games prefer fewer cores with better single core performance rather than many slower ones) sucks, hence why everyone preferes i5s.

2: It's like RAM, but on the CPU and MUCH MUCH faster, higher is better, 4-8 is average.

3: GHz of frequency!

4: When only one or two cores are working, they boost up!

I'm going to PM you something I wrote in an assignment on processors... Hopefully that should help. (don't want to post it here, because plagiarism and stuff)

Can you PM it to me too? Just curious to see it!

This isnt a troll post right? getting my hands typing? :P anyways i just want to say that 8 cores is not "needed". 1 core is enough, 4 cores can be enough, depends on the tasks you intend to run. Cache, againt 20MB is far from a must have but again it (depends). In short overclocking is boosting the clock speed of a (in this case processor) to make it run faster. Turbo boost is when the other cores give their power to 1 core to make it run faster (better). Its better (if you intend to build a pc atm) to just ask people, tell us your budget (currency) and use of the computer.

Cores:

think about the entire CPU (core processing unit) as a brain. the more cores, the more tasks it can handle at once. 8 cores at the moment is overkill for 99% of the users now, as most people will not utilize it.

Cache:

It's hard to explain, but it kind of is like a small buffer on which data can be stored and quickly accessed. Higher is better. And once again, that amount is overkill amount for most people.

Overclocking:

A CPU runs at a certain frequency, which can easily be explained as: how fast it can go. Not all GHz is equal, but that's a bit more advanced.

Turbo boost:

When the CPU sees it has to do more stuff, it can basically say to itself that it should go faster. it boosts up. the GHz will go higher

Yeah I'd like to read this also.

Oh @OP.

8Cores aren't needed. I'd reccodmend a i5-4590 for your first PC build. People above gave great advice also. The i5 is plenty for gaming and semi intensive CPU task.

the 5960x is intels highest cpu on the LGA 2011 Socket.

you dont 'need' 8 cores to be honest. but for rendering videos is definitely a handy thing to have.

turbo boost means that it will boost from its stock speed of 3GHZ upto 3.5ghz

overclocked to 4ghz means it will constantly run at 4GHZ instead of turboing to 3.5 and then stopping there

Well hello and welcome to the forums!

Let's start with the "5690X" part. It's just a model number to help tell you which Core "i7" it is.

8 cores: The "core" is something that takes in information 1's and 0's and spits out more 1's and 0's, which looks like a loaded page on your screen, or something like that. You don't need 8 cores unless you do heavy CAD and video editing.

Cache: It's like memory, but on the CPU. It's incredibly fast. There's a techquikie video on it, just FYI.

Clock speed: The Clock speed just references how fast the CPU goes. (How many Hertz. 1 Ghz= 1000000 Hz)

Overclocking: Making the CPU go faster with settings in the BIOS (You can add more voltage, but it's not necessary)

Turbo Boost: Intel's way of making the CPU go faster while still keeping your warranty.

Yay, Initial D!

plagiarism is overrated. Unless it's a thesis paper for college then I wouldn't worry about it.
