Hello linustechtippers, new here and after binge watching most of the linustechtips youtube videos I have decided to build a new Gaming rig but I am stuck at my starting point and picking the CPU. Performance wise which is better 5960x or the 4960x? CPU boss gives the edge to the 5960x while a simple google search from futuremark.com for processors in september of this year has the 4960x 5 places higher at number 1. So money not being an issue which one will give me the best gaming performance now and last me longer as cpu tech improves in the years to come. Thanks for the answers and helping get off to building my new gaming behemoth.

The i5 4690, not joking, if you only need to game on it go for the i5... Or skylake...

first of all, if youre only looking for gaming performance, a 6700k will perform the best

there are no games that can use 16 cores

you should only ever buy an extreme edition CPU if you actually use it for stuff like editing, rendering, 3d modeling, etc...

and the 5960x is better than the 4960x because not only is it newer architecture, but it also has 2 cores and 4 threads more

NEW PC build: Blank Heaven   minimalist white and black PC     Old S340 build log "White Heaven"        The "LIGHTCANON" flashlight build log        Project AntiRoll (prototype)        Custom speaker project

That, not even Linus editors use the 5960x lol. For gaming get the i7-6700k, Z170 motherboard and DDR4 RAM.

5960x is workstation geared. IE if you're rendering something, designing in 3D or generally needing 16 threads. Utterly pointless spending all that money on just gaming. This is true for extreme editions of late.
With that said, I quite enjoy gaming on mine. Though it is OC'd to 4.5Ghz, stock its kinda meh for CPU intensive games.

If your money isn't infinite go for Skylake or devils canyon.

"The wheel?" "No thanks, I'll walk, its more natural" - thus was the beginning of the doom of the Human race.
Cheese monger.

If people would stop going ''Oh i5 is good for gaming'' that be nice.

Not only because some people will benefit from the performance that the i7 5960x gives, not only in applications but also in gaming, yes it does benefit in gaming, espicially when going 3-4 way SLI.

Anyways, from what I've seen here in Scandinavia, the price on 4960x and 5960x are about the same, and honestly the 5960x is newer and has some great features that 4960x didnt have, so I'd go with the 5960x.

PS - If you dont wanna buy the most expensive one, i'd suggest 5820k over 6700k anyday. Yes out of the box, the core clock is lower, but it overclocks really good, most people get them up to 4.4.-4.5Ghz with going too much beyond 1.300v

CPU: i7 5820k @4.5Ghz | Mobo: MSI X99A SLI Plus | RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix DDR4 Quad Channel | GPU: GTX 970 @ 1579 Mhz | Case: Cooler Master HAF 922 | OS: Windows 10

Storage: Samsung 850 Evo 250GB | PSU: Corsair TX750 | Display: Samsung SyncMaster 2233 & SyncMaster SA350 | Cooling: Cooler Master Seidon 120M

Keyboard: Razer Lycosa | Mouse: Steelseries Kana | Sound: Steelseries Siberia V2

Between the two 5960X is the clear choice but really for gaming and 'a small youtube channel' you should look at the 6700K.

People would stop if it wasn't true ^^

Who goes 3-way sli with an i5? If you buy a 4690 you don't have money for 3 gpus... And it's only beneficial when going 3 or 4 way sli just because of its support for more than 16 PCIe lanes. And nobody said anything about oc, right? Then, silicon lottery counts too...

This is my definitive answer ^^

Its not just a matter of PCIE Lanes, its a matter of how strong the CPU is, not just per core but overall as well. The better the CPU, the less chance of potential bottlenecks you will get, when it comes to graphics cards performance.

Lets just take an out of portion example, if you have the i7 5960x along with 3-Way Titan X, you must overclock the CPU, espicially if you overclock the Titans, why? You will get bottlenecked by the CPU, if dont do so. This has nothing to do with PCIE Lanes, and refer back to what I just stated.

Heck some CPUs will even bottleneck with one GPU, which says alot.

Not major difference in gaming ..

However, keep in mind that 5960x is newer and uses x99 motherboard .. So you'll get some more motherboard goodies like M.2 and stuff .. might give you better and longer future-proof

Weird, in the last video where everyone was putting together their computers I never heard mention of a 5960x in their computers.

when they first built their PCs for the whole room watercooling loop they showed the parts going into them

im pretty sure they just transferred the CPUs to the new builds

If you research 'gaming pc' properly you won't find any mention of the X series CPUs.  Try mentioning how much you want to spend and what performance you want.
