I'd usually say the 390, but the 970 is way cheaper so get that.

- CPU: Intel i7 3770 - GPU: MSI R9 390 - RAM: 16GB of DDR3 - SSD: Crucial BX100 - HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB -

I don't find the difference worth it, the performance of the 390 and 970 is really close.

The 390 will last for years and years due to its 8GB memory size and full DX12_0 feature level support.

The 970 is a card based on the most software dependent GPU architecture to date.

the choice is really one of longevity vs. hype... well... and more money now vs. more money later, I guess.

Not even close. If they were the same price like they are in the US I'd take the R9 390, but for even $25 less I'd take a GTX 970 instead in a second. At $160 less getting a 970 is a no-brainer, especially if you're looking to play at 1080p where the 970 and 390 trade blows. You will freaking love the 970, it plays everything amazingly at 1080p. For 1440p I wouldn't go any lower than a 980 Ti, but I have to have 60 fps in my games and I play mostly RPGs, which are usually the games that push your GPU the hardest, so your mileage might vary. For 1440p the R9 390 is unquestionably better, but not hugely better to where the $160 price difference would make any sense.

I don't know, I think it's a mistake to worry too much about longevity, and 4GB is still a lot of VRAM in an era where games are still mostly optimized for 2GB. I guess I'm assuming @Samanvaya is playing 1080p by default since he never brought up the resolution though.

The 970 is so much cheaper in your country you may as well get it man, the two cards trade blows and its really not worth it to get the 390 with that sort of price premium.

That is true, I suppose. I game at 1440p, and rarely see VRam usage above 2GB even on new titles, so that is a valid point. There are some games that will use 4GB at 1080p, but they are outliers. The other half of what I said was about DX12. honestly a 290/290x would be a cheaper option if memory size is not a concern, and still have full dx12_0 support. that is, if the 290 is available or similar in price to a 970 in india.
