Ripped pcie slot

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

@Enderman

I cannot cut any closer than i already did. I tried with magnifying glass, but i cannot get closer. On picture it may seem that you can cut it closer, but is not possible.

thats why you use those side cutters ;) cut almost perfectly flat

but yeah it looks like none are touching and as long as you dont hit it with something and bend a pin they will not touch on their own

I would say its safe to use

just make sure you got all metal shavings off the motherboard with compressed air or that could cause issues later on

Hi,

i just wanna check something with you guys... Long story short, i trusted someone with almost no experiance with computers to remove graphic card and send it to RMA. Well this happened.

No local repair shop wanted to fix this. I dont need this pcie slot, im just afraid something will get short circuit. So i cut thoose pins, to avoid them touching each other.

I know i shouldnt trust this kind of stuff to people who doesnt have computer knowledge, but it was my mistake and i recognize it (pretty mad at myself). Im just curios if i need to buy new motherboard or is it safe to use this one? BTW, computer boots, but i dont wanna put my other components "in danger" by using it. I dont wanna spend another 200€ on new motherboard, but i would rather do that, then risk destroying all components. My coworker who knows alot about this kind of hardware  said it was safe to use it like this, just to put some electric tape over it. What is your suggestion?

probably wont be an issue, can i ask why did you let someone do this in the first place?, your error and i guess you have to face the consequence.

Wow. Well I've run motherboards with SATA connectors broken off so I can say it is reasonably safe. But I wouldn't trust it in the long run, so maybe think about replacing it sooner rather than later.

And please don't let the person that did that swap in your motherboard.

cut all of those pins off, make 100% sure that none of them are touching eachother

then use a different PCIe x16 slot for your GPU

everything should work still perfectly fine

I recommend you use this kind of side cutters

thje closer to the PCB you cut those pins, the less chance there is of them ever touching

Just listen to your Co worker he has the right idea. If you can live with out the slot then get some insulation tape and cover the pins to avoid any shorting. It makes no difference whether or not the pins are covered by the pcie slot or tape as long as they can't touch each other or any loose wires your good.
