Between a 7950 and a 580 which one should I get? I can pick up either one used on Ebay for $200USD. I'm not going to be overclocking and since they are used I won't get any of the extra perks like game bundles. I just want something to hold me over until Maxwell.

Definitely 7950.... but you could get a new one on NewEgg for only $219 after rebate.  Just $20 for a new one might be the way to go.

7950. Don't even consider the 580 if it's up against the 7950.

Unless you want to cook food on your GPU, then any Fermi card will do just fine.

the 5xx is a fermi refresh

no where as hot as the 4xx cards

anyways

OP buy the 7950 its like 179.99 with rebate on newegg !!!

Haha thanks guys!! I think I'll take the dive tomorrow and see how it is. I'm holding every person on here personally responsible if I'm disappointed ;). I really need to do some more reading up on the AMD graphics side of things. I haven't needed a new card since I got my 460, but shes starting to show her age and with the games I picked up on the summer sale, plus with the mods I tried to add to skyrim just brought the game to a complete crawl, and they were just mostly updated textures. The last time I bought an AMD (then ATI) card was the 2900, so I haven't really been watching the red team too closely.

I saw this earlier: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127737

The only icky thing about it, is like everyone says it runs super warm.  So you would totally need a good case!!

You'd want to get a dual fan cooler instead for the 7950: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202026&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

It's less important for cards like the 7770/7850 though.
