i7 4790K or i7 6700K?

TheBudi114

For my new rig, I planned on using an i7 6700K on an Asus Z170M-Plus Motherboard, with Gskill Ripjaws4 Red 2x4GB as RAM.

But, certain people say that buying skylake is not worth it...

So which should I buy? And if you choose the 4790K, what motherboard should I use (must be around the Z170M-Plus price and size), and what ram would you recommend?

Well it depends on purpose for computer, price difference and availability of Skylake to whether it's worth buying

I've been here with the same question for like a week ago.

Decided to go with 6700k, since it costs almost the same with 4790k, has lower TDP and power consumption.

You should be fine with any z170 mobo, just get size and I\O you desire.

Skylake has a higher TDP, but lower power consumption ;)

Well, maybe I misundestood it, yeah :)

Anyways, I have it watercooled. Since I'm running heavy computations for days, power consumption is significant for me.

Budi,

Well, you will get both sides of the argument... pros and cons.

Which one is better?

I can argue that an i7 5960k processor on an Intel X99 chipset based motherboard can keep up with the i7 6700k on an Intel Z170 chipset based motherboard.

So... who is right?

In the final analysis... the end user decides.

Regardless of which setup you choose, you'll be getting a super fast computer build.

Skylake is worth it for gaming, it's a significant step up in certain cpu-heavy situations/games like far cry 4, crysis3, gta5.

Thats a good point. I wont be doing much gaming on it though. Its more of a budget video editing rig.

Well it depends on purpose for computer, price difference and availability of Skylake to whether it's worth buying

Purpose: Casual Gaming and Video Editing

Yes, but again... similar results in what kind of situation?

The benchmarks will vary if you are doing gaming as compared to video editing and other types of heavy computing.

Take a look at my computer build. That's what I would be suggesting to you in this kind of situation.

I forgot to mention... you got to have at least 16 GB of system RAM if you are going to be doing video editing. You'll need it.

Based on what you said in your previous post...

Just save the money, don't buy parts a little at a time. A lot can change in 6-8 months. Come back with a budget.
