How to make Fakominator Platinum (Reuse your Dominator Platinum Heatsink)

This is my first post. Please pardon my broken English.

I recently upgraded to X99 platform and I bought generic Samsung DDR4 DIMMs to save some money.

My system concept is Red and Black and those green PCBs look awful.

So I decided to recycle my Dominator Platinum Heatsinks from my DDR3 system.

<Disassembly>

Disassemble heatsink cover with alan wrench.

post-257327-0-05608800-1441087748_thumb.

Use heatgun at low setting or hair dryer to heat up the heatsink.

There are 2 types of heatsinks I encountered.

Type 1 :

post-257327-0-84421400-1441091522_thumb.

Wiggle the protuding parts at top back and forth, and you can detach the top part.

(If wiggling does not do the job, see Type 2 below.)

post-257327-0-60797300-1441091525_thumb.

After detaching the top part, pry open both sides gently.

post-257327-0-33185700-1441091528_thumb.

Heat the assembly between trys if the resistance is too high.

Type 2 :

post-257327-0-56794500-1441091812_thumb.

Type 2 has different top piece. You have to pry open side parts first.

Gently tug and heat as needed.

After Side parts are detached, you can pull out top part.

Now nude Dominator modules.

<Transplanting heats onto new DIMM>

After disassenbling heat sinks, put the heatpads on the heatsinks and apply little bit of thermal compound onto ram chips.

(Not for better thermal conductivity. Heatpads have adhesive which makes positioning the heatsinks rather difficult, so thermal compound is used as some lubricant.)

post-257327-0-08460100-1441087638_thumb.

Put both heatsinks onto the new module. There are two screw holes you need to be ware of. (Samsung DDR4 DIMMs fit perfectly below the holes.) You can usually slide them around as long as you don't screw both heatsinks down. After positioning the heatsinks you can put 4 screws in.

post-257327-0-71214600-1441087643_thumb.

Finished. It would've been perfect if I used DIMMs with black PCB.

Almost unnoticible beside a little bit of green showing...

Don't waste any more money on fancy heatsinks. Instead put your old ones to use!!!

>has watercooled PC with 3/4 Way SLI TITAN X

>didnt have enough money to buy a DDR4 Fancy RAM

>okay.jpg

That's just Titan X backplate on my 980 ti. And it's only(?) 2-way.

X99 upgrade was unscheduled (My X79 mobo died on me) so I didn't want to spend too much money.

And Corsair DIMMs in my country (S. Korea) is so overpriced that I could've actually add one more 980 ti for the price of 32GB quad channel kit.

I plan to reuse these heatsinks until DDR8 (?) haha.

I can get 4x4GB at 2666hz for € 231,50 here, so not that expensive.

sorry becoz i saw the Triple / Quad SLI Bridge so i think you are running Tri / Quad SLI, and theres no way a 32GB Quad kit is EQUIVALENT to 980Ti thats bullshit :(

I am running 4x8GB and Dominator Platinum 4x8GB 2666Mhz kit costs about 700,000KRW (about 530euro I think) and I could get another used 980ti with that kind of money... :(

I am just using triple bridge with blocking thingy in the middle just to make my case look fuller :)

Dominator Quad kit costs about $600 here, and I could get another second hand 980ti with $600 :(
