Best/Cheapest GPU setup for 1440p 144hz

PsychoPro42
Go to solution Solved by Jaqen,

Radeon R9 390 is the way to go. It's better than the GTX 970 and costs about the same.

not enough for 1440p at 120hz+

980ti is the cheapest solution for 100hz at 1440p nothing else will get up to that performance for less money

By the way even the 980ti will not maintain 60fps at 1440p constantly on some games (Witcher 3)

Hello, I am looking into getting a new monitor and a new graphics card that is more suited for my CPU. I currently have an i7 4790K and an Asus GTX 750Ti. I decided that I wanted a higher refresh rate (to allow for higher fps) and a higher resolution, but I have been struggling to find the right graphics card set up needed to run games properly. I don't expect new 'AAA' titles (e.g. GTA V, Far Cry) to run beyond 60 - 75 fps, if not more, but what I do want is for older 'AAA' games and most indie games to run at 100+ fps preferably 120+ fps. I would like the cheapest possible set up that fits the bill ,give or take a few fps. Thanks in advance.

Side note: The cheapest good 1440p 144hz monitor that I have found runs Freesync (BenQ XL2730Z). So, I would prefer AMD recommendations but if you don't think Freesync is worth it then feel free to give Nvidia recommendations.

I'd pick up the R9 290(X), really good card for 1440p gaming, but i'm not sure if it can stand the FPS requirements of your choice! :S

If you would like freesync, maybe hold out until the R9 nano to see what its performance will be like at those resolutions.

 junker build in the making

That's what I was originally leaning towards but since the DX12 benchmarks I decided to wait until they were confirmed

Under DX12 it should experience a bigger performance boost than the GTX 970. But nothing is 100% sure yet, I might be wrong.

Probably the best choice at the current time. Thanks.

Does anyone know if there is a large performance difference between the 390 and the 390x? or is it just a few fps?

I tweaked the shit out of Witcher 3 HW off, way beyond ULTRA and have 60+ all the time.
