6700K is fine. Spend the extra money you would have spent on the 5820K and get better peripherals.

I don't like 2D games...I just couldn't get into them.. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

5820k - it has 6 cores, with hyperthreading. Meaning 12 threads.

6700K is fine. Spend the extra money you would have spent on the 5820K and get better peripherals.

better peripherals does not equal to increase FPS.

Anyway, they'd be virtually the same when it comes to FPS in games.

If you want to look at it that way, then yes.

The OP said he would be using this PC for gaming.

Mouse: You need a decent mouse with a good sensor, especially if you are playing FPS games.

Keyboard: The OP may or may not want a Cherry MX keyboard which feel great for games but is more costly.

Monitor/Display: The OP may or may not want a decent monitor to use with his 980Ti. He might want to consider 1440P or an IPS panel or even GSYNC.

Headphones: Good sound always helps..

Microphone: Assuming you have friends to talk to..

Oh yeah. Games.

For the price of a decent Z170 mobo the i7-6700k and the ram it will be within $30-$50 of the 5820k. It will be CHEAPER especially if op lives near a micro center which the 5820k is ONLY $300.

Well if it's cheaper than the 6700K then I guess you are right. But that depends on where the OP lives. I didn't realise the price difference was so close and therefore the OP might as well go with the 5820K. However, I still believe peripherals are a very important part of the system :)

They aren't as important but makes for a good experience. You can always go get new peripherals but it would be quite pricey to go and buy a x99 mobo and 5820k if the i7 doesn't deliver.

Monitor? You won't be able to see anything without a monitor..

I'm guessing you'd say a £50 monitor would work just fine..

Does it have 1080P? Probably not.. Does OP want 1080P?At least.

Does the OP want 120Hz? Maybe..but not for £50..

GSYNC for £50... nah.

 

You can't use a PC without peripherals. I do however agree that you don't need an expensive keyboard. But.. the OP might however want a Cherry MX keyboard.

If he wants a chance to kill someone in FPS games, you need a quality mouse.

Headphones are just as important.

 

EDIT: I know the monitor isn't a peripheral but it's still something to be considered here..

In my country a good mobo for the x99 is 150 euro more expensive then a z170 mobo so i have bought a i7-6700k. And also i don't see why people are constantly advising a 5820 wich is for professional rendering and editing mostly!

And the 5820knis almost 50 euro more expensive then the i7-6700k thats 200 euro more then the z170 platform

 

I agree with you. I feel like if you do more like 50/50 on gaming and applications, then it is easier to recommend the 5820k. If gaming was the focus then the 6700k doesn't look to bad. Just my opinion of course.

The i7-6700K will perform better in games because it has an higher IPC, but the 5820K will perform better at multi-threaded workstation applications, pick which you want most.

 

The 5820K while being a workhorse will perform flawlessly at gaming as well provided you clock it to 4.0ghz...and the 6700K is not bad in multi-threaded situations as well it's a very powerful CPU so you won't miss much going with either of them.

I do a lot of game engine coding in c++ and i would lose my mind without my 5820k
