Go Xeon E3. Locked i7 no igpu for $250. It'll be miles better for games and multi-thread work.

but you need equivalent good motherboard which not comes cheap most of time

for $300 CPU+Mobo combo, why not just grab i5

 

or look for used i7 (sandy/ivy), that would certainly better option and ofcourse will get better results for your needs.

Is not a bad buy, is just that as mentioned a lot of other options like a xeon or an entry level i5 are still much better: lots of newer features and access to upgrades vs none at all since AM3 is a dead platform.

that's the answer - the xeon does a good job in my rig even with gaming and blender rendering via cpu (or baking) so it'll be a good choice

Agreeing with most, for your purposes a Xeon quadcore with hyperthreading makes more sense, the E3-1231 V3 is particularly well regarded for personal builds, but the other has a higher frequency (and price tag)

If you can get a deal on one or drop one into a system you already have I would say sure it's still good.

For video editing realistically it's a toss up, there are probably a lot bigger inefficiencies in your workflow than the difference in time an 8350 takes compared to an Intel chip at the same price.

Also when you're doing CAD, video editing/encoding, and photo editing, memory is going to matter more, so for whatever budget you have, look to buy 16GB of RAM and go from there. The FX-8350 will still be good for your needs. Yes there are better options out there, but if you're in a budget crunch, sometimes you need to compromise. But, again, memory will be more important on this, so budget for that first.

That mobo will fry with a FX-8350 he should get a FX-8320E or 70E!

I'll have to pay more for a better mobo because there is not nearly enough USB and SATA ports for my needs. Looks good though!

The difference/speed is like under a minute from what I've seen, but that can be a huge difference for someone with a schedule. It ranges from like 15 seconds to 45 seconds depending on various things.

Shipping is only $5-$10 for a motherboard/cpu on most sites.... that's not gonna raise it enough to push it outside of his budget. And even then it would be worth the extra $20 over an amd cpu for his uses.
