It is in a relatively restrictinve cabinet, with only 0.5 inches for fan to breath

ah, didn't see that part. I suspect it's not the paste, more of that the hot air can't get out if the cabinet. Leave the door to it open would probe hlep.

Well in my previous case (the best recorded air cooling temps of any case on the market)

it idled at like 55 degrees still, so its defiantly something.

See what temps you get outside of the cabinet first.

See what temps you get outside of the cabinet first.

in my previouse case that had the best tested air temps on the market,

it still idled at like 55-60 so there is deff a cooler/paste problem

I mean, I'm watercooling in like 5 days, but I don't want to overheat my CPU first

I've never really had this issue unless I didn't reapply thermal paste and just reused the old.

It doesn't take long, so it's worth a shot. Maybe the cooler isn't making great contact with the cpu, too.

Or you could have a bad sensor

Got any baselines for this CPU? Like before it was in cabinet?

Weird...

I guess we won't know until it's underwater, I'll have to check out your build log.

Like I said might aswell re apply because it is such a quick process, but in the situation you described it doesn't make sense to me if that is the problem.

It's kinda crazy how performance pc's almost has a monopoly right now, luckily their pricing isn't any different though. I'm looking to FINALLY watercool, if I could just find me a 980 hydro copper for sale for cheapish on eBay or somewhere.

Not got an SSD or are you folding/lots of running programs :P? Ever since I made the upgrade to an 840 pro a while ago I almost enjoy restarting my pc :D
