Go to solution Solved by ionbasa,

See my post here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/431067-macbook-starting-to-crash-and-restart-on-its-own/?p=5850313

You can get it fixed free of charge.

Until then, you can uses this app: https://gfx.io/

and force your GPU to the Intel iGPU instead of the nvidia card. Its a hardware issue and nothing can be done about it, unless apple replaces the motherboard.

Help, it started crashing since last night, and somehow later that night it resumed normal. But today when I put it to sleep then waking it, it crashed again. Here I'll paste the crash log

I'm no pro, but considering it says "GPU panic", I would guess that it is GPU related.

@howietofu

Looks like a 15" MacBook Pro with retina display.

1. Boot to the Recovery partition https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201314

2. Partition your drive   https://support.apple.com/kb/ph5845?locale=en_US  (the section "Create new partitions on a disk")

3. Install OS X on the new partition with unique name.  https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18872?locale=en_US

4. Use the Boot manager to select the new volume and test. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204417

If it doesn't crash in the new OS, you can manually migrate all your stuff to it, or start digging around in the broken OS for third party kernel extensions, drivers, software conflicts, etc.

Or it could simply be a corrupted volume that could be fixed with Disk Utility's Repair Disk (also in the Recovery partition).   https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201639

You could also test it in Safe mode. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Looks like your gpu is failing.

Would you be able to provide the serial number from the bottom of the machine, so I can check it's warranty/recall status?

You can get it fixed free of charge.

Until then, you can uses this app: https://gfx.io/

and force your GPU to the Intel iGPU instead of the nvidia card. Its a hardware issue and nothing can be done about it, unless apple replaces the motherboard.

Is this by chance the 15" Macbook Pro, Mid 2010. If so, check out: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203554

Those MBPs were known to have GPU issues. You might be able to email apple support and convince them to do an RMA on it, even if the eligibility to have your model fixed ended a few months ago.

GPU's dead, mark the comment above mine solved

its way more expensive to buy a new gpu for mac

he needs a reflow or reball, but in this situation, reball for sure. Is this guy deaf or have no touch or feeling, cuz those GPU's in the Mac get very hot. And with the the heat and cooler the tiny solder balls, have cracked, and since of RoHs there is no lead, making the solder weaker.

Well then. Here is the updated page to where the OP can get it fixed: http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will repair affected MacBook Pro systems, free of charge. See below for details on affected models and service options.

...

Products affected

15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models manufactured in 2011

15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina models manufactured from Mid 2012 to Early 2013

lead free solder sucks. I tried it and then threw it in the bin. Worthless.

its also very hard to work with. Yes a 13 yr old know how to solder, reflow, and do rework.

Y'all mind staying on topic?

@Emanuel_M The OP doesn't need to reball or reflow anything. See Post #22. Its covered by Apple free of charge for his model. Most people don't have reballing equipment anyway, or have the technical skill to do so, so its quite a nonsensical suggestion.

@iamdarkyoshi Lead free solder is fine. Yes, ball joints may start to fail and crack, but using high quality lead free solder with decent flux usually avoids that issue. I haven't really had any problems with using Pb free solder.

the lead free solder you get from the store is different from what manufactures use. To pass RoHs safety they take all of the lead they can take out of it. I'm plus what I said that what they will do, that cannot most likely put a new GPU in, becuase of age, and most likely tied to the MoBo.

I use this. Lead Free, RoHS compliant.

Also, if you read my previous post, you'll see it's still covered by Apple free of charge as it was a manufacturing fault. And yes; they will replace the entire motherboard, not just the dedicated GPU.
