I won't do the "long story short" thing, because then it wouldn't make sense.

Either way, here we go.

So I had a copy of Windows 8.1 pro a forum member provided me.

I wanted to install it so I could get Windows 10 pro.

Well 8 broke my PC so hard that it can't properly function. By this, I mean when I turn it on, the keyboard and mouse will only work for short bursts.

So now I need a bit of help. I have my laptop available and I need to try and load window 10 pro onto it.

I am right now thinking I'd have to boot it from a usb with the install. I don't have a discdrive. So there's no disc options.

I'm not very experienced with OS installs or how they work, so I really need a lot of help here. Like hold my hand type help.

If it helps system specs

4770k

GTX 780

16 GB 186 Mhz RAM

HX650w

H100i

MSi GD65 Gaming

Boot drive is and 840 EVO

and yes, it did install correctly.

Thanks for any help.

What do you mean with "load Windows 10 Pro onto it". Do you want to install Windows 10 on your laptop, or do you just want to download it?

Ahh, OK.

Just download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool and chose to create a media.

If you have a large enough USB drive plugged in, it will allow you to make it into a bootable Windows installer drive.

Won't I need a key?

And what does the "N" mean in the version selection menu?

Won't I need a key?

That's actually a good question. I don't know.

You could always try.

You could also go with @ZetZet's solution, and either reinstall Windows 8 or try to repair your current installation. It does sound like something went wrong the first time around.

This is done by just booting from the media you used to install Windows 8 in the first place.

This has happened ever time I install it,

Except usually I don't finish the install because it BSOD's before then.

Mmmmmm, I reading it as........ you went from Windows 10 to Windows 8.1 then to Windows 10 ????

I mean what was pre Windows 8.1 ?

If you have a Windows 8.1 pro, Reinstall, without formatting, then upgrade to windows 10, Then Drag / Drop, Docs to docs, Desktop to desktop..........etc, from windows.old

Means there's no media features. No media player or camera.

Our Grace. The Feathered One. He shows us the way. His bob is majestic and shows us the path. Follow unto his guidance and His example. He knows the one true path. Our Saviour. Our Grace. Our Father Birb has taught us with His humble heart and gentle wing the way of the bob. Let us show Him our reverence and follow in His example. How did you create the boot media for the Windows 8 installer?

Becuase it sounds like there is either something wrong with the media or your PC. Assuming your PC ran fine before the install, I would think that the media isn't as it should be.

Can you navigate to SYSTEM > REMOTE SETTINGS and Enable REMOTE DESKTOP ? before you KB Stops ?

Then remote from the laptop to the desktop and lets get un-installing and reinstalling drivers ?

Nope, I can;t even access he desktop.

IMO best option is probably just to wipe it.

Have you tired installing it using a DVD? I know, i must sound ancient by now, but the old school disk methode is sometimes more reliable (atleast in my experience)

Also, if you had Windows 7, why did you upgrade to Windows 8? Both Windows 7 and 8 got free upgrades to Windows 10.

But I think, I took this is a somewhat wrong direction.

Did you try installing Windows 10 using the Media Creation Tool?

1. No cd drive on tower.

2. As of this momenthe media creation tool is stuck at 0%.

  1. You kids and your lack of optical media support. If everything fails, you can probably always borrow an external optical drive.
  2. It takes a while, so find a comfortable chair.
