CPU Purchase? Please help.

Go to solution Solved by FLUFFYJELLO,

Yeah i'm thinking about not spending over 400 USD so after i sell my current mobo and cpu i'm pretty golden, Thanks for all the help really!

Glad I could help! Good luck with the upgrade.

Just got the Geforce GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 and looking to upgrade my cpu to match it.

Current CPU is the AMD FX 4130 and i was thinking about getting the AMD FX 8350 but then a lot of people on other forums say the i5-4690k but there is such a price difference here i'm not sure if it's worth it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please let me know if you need more info.

it is worth it getting the i5 4690k or even the i5 4460 which will give you much better minimum FPS than the 8350 and will allow you to upgrade to an i7 later. even an i3 would fight an 8350

The intel is not only more expensive, but would require a new motherboard so it is really MUCH MUCH more expensive...

When in doubt, re-format.

For gaming, the FX 8350 is just not very great, which is why people recommend the i5 4690K.

If that is too expensive, you could also go down to an i5 4460, which is still a great gaming CPU with a more 'attractive' price tag. Just keep in mind you have to get a new motherboard for this CPU.

the FX chip is cheaper, has 8 cores over the i5's 4 cores.

but the i5 has MUCH better single threaded performance, and runs much cooler than the FX.

i'd say i5 if you can afford the chip, but take in consideration the i5 can run on a stock heatsink if money is tight, but the FX will be a jet engine when running with a stock cooler.

@GalaxyRogerz since there is a lot of ignorance in this topic, I will assist you. I own a GTX 970 from MSI paired with a FX-8350 overclocked to 4,5gHz.
I have not noticed any bottlenecks from the CPU in any games I played (AC:Unity, The Witcher 3, Battlefield 4, Dragon Age:Inquisition, Tomb Raider).
It's a great CPU for its value and with the upcoming DirectX12 it will be even better in gaming.

Of course i5-4690k is a BETTER CPU, no doubt about it, but if you wanna game and your budget is tight, get the FX. It's more than enough and it's raw power in benchmarks is very close to  the 4690. I would not get the 4690k since I would go either for the cheaper FX option or gather more money for the i7-4790k simply because my usage of the PC benefits from the 8 cores/threads.

With that in mind: i5 is a better CPU, but the FX gets the job done only slightly worse in most modern games since most of them use AT LEAST 4 of the threads, and many of them use all 8, so 8350 after overclock is definitely enough for the 970:)

The problem is that i'm 16 and i'm buying all the parts for myself, i have a decent paying job but I've already spent almost 900USD on other parts, i don't think I would be justified getting the i5 but i would if it didn't need another motherboard so I'm thinking about getting the 8350 and use it until next year, then I'll have enough money for a new motherboard and atleast the 4690k.

Or, you could just announce your 4300 + mobo for sale at a low price, and once someone ends up buying, you end up with that extra cash for the i5.

I might just do that but i don't know what motherboard i would have to get and would the motherboard for the i5 cost about the same?

The motherboard for the i5 would actually be significantly cheaper than boards rated to both work with and overclock the 8350; which you will need to overclock it to match (kinda) the stock performance of an i5; then get an aftermarket cooler if you don't already have one. Also if you don't have a good enough mobo you'll have to buy a new one anyway to support the power draw of the 8350.

There are many "hidden costs" when going with the *upper tier FX CPUs that Intel just doesn't have. You can overclock an i5 to 4GHz on the stock cooler (it will be loud but you can do it). Some things to consider.

Honestly, if you can hold out on your current CPU until you can go Intel, that's your best option I think. "Upgrading" through the FX line nets almost no performance gain except on a few AAA titles.

I think i'll just sell my current motherboard and cpu and get an i5. What motherboard would you suggest without going overboard? Thanks

Which i5 are you looking at getting? If 4690K then any cheap Z97 board for solid overclocking. Asus Z97-A is a solid pick, or the Asrock anniversary.

Locked i5? Any H81/B85 or H87/97 boards are fine. What price range are you looking at for the motherboard?

Also details like what country you live in, whether you live near a microcenter, etc. These are all important details we need to know to give more accurate suggestions, if you please.

So I am looking to take my current ATX build and putting it into an mATX or mITX case for better mobility for lan parties without giving up the great airflow and performance as my current case.

I have an AMD fx 8320 with 2 slots of ram a standard hard drive and will also be getting an ssd and would be upgrading to either an r9 280x or r9 380.

A single 120mm cpu liquid cooling block is also in my build but I would be willing to change that if there is a better cooling solution for a small build like this.

I live in Iceland and i don't think there's any international techshop except a website some dude just started called techshop.is and he buys pc parts from other countries and sells them cheap here. But i think i can get any part from any of the local pc stores around. My budget would be around 350-400 might change depending on how much i can get for my current cpu and motherboard.

The Intel equivelant of the FX 8350 price is the i5 4460 wich is about 230 USD

Also one question, i have a Gigabyte motherboard and AMD cpu do all motherboards only support AMD or Intel?.

If you have a cheap board you cannot put a FX-8350 into it anyway so a swap could be what you want also. :P

If you don't plan to overclock the 4690 is the best i5 you can get; but at that price you'd be better off getting a Xeon 1231v3 and pairing it with an H87/H81 mobo. It's clocked the same as the 4690 but has hyperthreading, but no iGPU. Very solid if you can get it around the same price of the 4690 (which it normally is).

If you don't plan to overclock the 4690 is the best i5 you can get; but at that price you'd be better off getting a Xeon 1231v3 and pairing it with an H87/H81 mobo. I think the Xeon products are extremely overpriced and rare here. Am i not getting my moneys worth if i get the i5 4690 and don't overclock it?

Nah, it's still an incredibly strong CPU for the money that will last you a good many years. The benefit of going with the 4690K is if you ever decide to get into overclocking you have that option. Generally they aren't that far apart in price ($5-$10?) And by overclocking you can squeeze a few more years out of your system without needing an upgrade. You'll see quite a few people in here using 2500K processors because they just flat out last through new generations.

I guess i'm going with the i5-4690 since i don't think i'll get into overclocking yet and i'm not really looking for a cpu that lasts 5 years, i'm going to want to upgrade to the flashy stuff as soon as i'm making real money and start fiddling with overclocking. What motherboard would be a decent fit for the 4690?

Just got the Geforce GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 and looking to upgrade my cpu to match it.

Current CPU is the AMD FX 4130 and i was thinking about getting the AMD FX 8350 but then a lot of people on other forums say the i5-4690k but there is such a price difference here i'm not sure if it's worth it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please let me know if you need more info.

The price is definitely worth it. Go for a 4690k or 6600k. If you do more than gaming go for an i7

You have some options. An H81 board like this would work fine.

Or a Z87 board along these lines would work too.

I didn't find a Z87, only the ASUS-Z97K and it's a 167 USD here and i think that's within my budget. Is the Z97 K fine or is that overkill?
