Great software. Personally I only use Malwarebytes paired with the default operating systems anti-virus. Free version should be fine if you don't do a lot of downloading from untrusted sources. Avast! is also a nice free antivirus but against premium software it is okay.

Yes, it's great for both live, on-demand and safe mode scanning.

Yes and no. It's supposed to be used as an additional scanner to an existing AV to detect any zero-day viruses.

Yes, for all my new install's  Malwarebytes + Avast 2015 are always the first 2 programs installed.
