Realistic 'Light Field' VR Headset

What the Stanford and Nvidia’s prototype does is create a sense of depth in each eye and combines it with the stereoscopic technique of showing images at slightly different angles in each eye. The prototype uses two transparent LCD screens layered on top of each other that produce the light field affect. Each eye is shown a combination of 25 images through the layered LDC screens to give the sense of depth. It’s sort of like putting a hologram in front of each eye.

Wetzstein has been working on light field display technologies since 2010, but only started working on this prototype a year ago when he joined Stanford. Wetzstein will be presenting a paper and giving demonstrations of the prototype next week at the SIGGRAPH 2015 Emerging Technologies conference at LA

What this means is no more feeling sick using VR. We need OLED not LCD with this tech.. Hope some big corporation flood the money on this..

Keep an eye on the company Magic Leap Inc. They are already developing similar technology and are backed by Google & others. $540+ million is a lot of money to bet on something unproven.

If this is what I think it is, future vr will be amazing. From what I can tell this tech will let your eyes focus on things vs having a pre determined depth of field like the oculus has. Take the Lytro illum for example. It's a lightfield camera that lets you change focus after the shot as it records the entire light field vs just a pre focused image.

Just hope it's a high refresh rate.

Current VR runs at 90Hz I am pretty sure, which is probably enough. But there are other issues apart from refresh rate to tackle.
