so I got a new gtx 970 a few days ago and boy it's worth it ! a big upgrade from a 680 IMO. now after seeing this article(below) it seems dedicated physx cards can give you frame rate boosts and stuff. with my current primary gpu (970) is it a good idea? the GT 640 or some GT card should work well according to some of my search what do you guys think?

The card would have to be as fast, or faster than you current gpu for you to see any increase in performance. If the card is too slow than your main card would be able to handle the processing better, and if it's too fast, then theres no point to have it only run physx, it would make more sense to just have that as the main card. It's really not ideal.

And if you're on an AMD gpu, and don't have a great cpu, then it might be worth it though, but you have to used hacked drivers and commands to even get the two gpus to work together.

linus did a video, a dedicated card gets like 3 to 5 fps more and less in some games. it isn't worth it.

I believe somewhere on the internet someone made a case against dedicated physx cards. They can lower frames in some games rather than raise them.

Only if the dedicated card is too slow

It can give a benefit in games that use heavy PhysX effects (like Arkham Knight, or Metro Last Light Redux). The 680 should be plenty fast enough to pair with the 970, but it's easy to test. Just grab a game that uses heavy-ish PhysX effects and try benching it with and without the 680 as a dedicated PhysX card. From what I gather it should work just fine.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

the gtx 680 is still a bit expensive was thinking around a GTX 650 or 750 LOL

but if you already own it, using it is free. Unless you wanted to sell it? If you wanted to sell it then don't bother buying a new card to use as a PhysX card.

The extra power the 2nd card will use at idle, vs the handful of games that actually use the propriety gpu physx isn't worth it.
