If you upgrade from Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, then no you will not. However, if you upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 then yes all of your files, datas, documents will be lost.

It's the same method as you upgrade Windows 8 to 8.1 . i did upgraded my Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 using manual setup and my stuff still here as i can still run Google Chrome after it finish setup.

I was not on 8 ever. So I will lose everything? I have 4-5 tb of stuff that cant just be deleted or moved until I get my nas up and working in 3-4 weeks

You will not lose your stuff if you upgraded from Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 because Microsoft just going to put your previous OS into recovery patition and then install Windows 10 onto your primary OS. Here i have my proof, i upgraded from 8.1 to 10.

If you have clients that go broke if they lose their files, you/they should already have a plethora of backups. I don't see an issue here?

Find the article here

"Not only do your applications, settings, and files move to Windows 10, you don’t have to jump through any hoops to make it happen. The upgrade’s setup wizard gives you “Keep personal files and apps” as the default setting. If, for some reason, you do want to ditch your applications, you have to click “Change what to keep” to access that menu; once you save those changes, you still have the chance to change your mind before you click the “Install” button." quote from that article.
