Intel i7 990x Extreme Edition Bottleneck..

Hey guys, I know this is stupid to ask but will the 990x bottleneck 2 980ti's?

If it's a very poorly optimized game, that is only capable of using two threads, then yes. The 990X has about 2/3 the single-core performance of a stock 4690, which on a single thread will bottleneck super hard. Overclocking will help, but not save the day.

 

If not, then not really in gaming.

First gen Intel is preety much at FX level so I would say yes it will unless you play at 4K?

No. That thing runs at 2.6GHz and that is with a core most likely running slower than P2/Piledriver. 

It may be a bottleneck, it's still a really good processor, the IPC just can't keep up with newer Processors. If you can overclock it a bit ,it probably won't be a bottleneck

actualy, that i7 came out in 2011, before sandy-bridge and the IPC on these is indeed simlar to the phenom II series...the baseclock for this CPU was around 3.4ghz and boost to 3.7ghz...you can hope to get 4.0 to 4.2ghz out of them depending on a lot of factors.

In terms of CPU this is similar to the AMD FX-9590 in that it has a very imressive name (i7-990X does sound bad-ass) and lots of cores/threads but when it comes to gaming again where anything above 4 cores is completely useless, and where fast and strong CPU cores reign supreme, this is no better than a Phenom II X6 or FX-6350 when it comes to running modern AAA games...even though it's intel, even though it's an i7, even though it has 12 threads, even though it's an enthousiast grade part that retailed for 1000$ back in the day, it's not much better than anything AMD Stuff from the same era.

intel saw a massive leap in IPC with sandy-bridge, and then again some with ivy and some more with haswell which has made them noticeably better for gaming, but this processor came BEFORE all that happened.

indeed...that's why i asked for screen resolution first...if he plan on doing 4K gaming 60FPS with 980ti in SLI...this processor is perfect he will be GPU bound in 9 games out of 10...but if he wants to play at 1080p 144HZ...this CPU is an absolute no go, and the 980ti SLI is useless...for 1080p this CPU is no match for even a single 980ti.

For 1440p i would go with this and a 980ti i would think it's a good match, and for 4K this CPU and dual 980ti in sli should be pretty good as well.

You're already $1500+ in the hole for 2 980tis, spend $300 more on an i5-4690k and motherboard

totally.

i mean this i7 is better than an AMD FX-9590 still...but not by much, and there will be many scenarios in which case this would totaly be a limiting factor to a single GTX 980ti...let alone two of them, it really depends on the settings and screen resolution and what kind of games it's going to play...it's still a good chip for many things, but it will show it's age when trown at modern CPU intensive games if paired with modern super-high-end graphics solutions that's a given.
