What console do plan on destroying? I'f you've got old hardware lying around you could easily destroy the Original Xbox and play a lot of modern games without spending a cent (and in my case put a couple of old Pentium III to good use).

Good point, but in all fairness it is still an expense you will have to consider.

Do you consider it when you buy a console which is designed to plug into your TV through HDMI?

Ugh, these threads are amazingly annoying. You're not going to destroy a console, the initial investment required to make a decent gaming computer is going to be too much to really outweigh the overall investment in a gaming console. You say that you save so much money during a Steam Sale and not paying for Xbox Live, but realistically most console gamers are looking at AAA titles that cost the same on PC regardless and $35/year is easier to chew than $1,000 immediately or constant upgrades to a system.

Also, this - http://www.amazon.com/Alienware-ASM100-1580-Console-i3-4130T-Processor/dp/B00MA7AMKY/?tag=firepowered-20

You're not going to build a more powerful system for the same price and in the same form factor.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

No mouse and keyboard, hard drive is smaller than what a $100 cheaper Xbox One will offer, no OS, not a console fighting form factor.

Most people have a TV in their house they can use already. Chances are people who are first time builders don't have a monitor laying around.

Computers and consoles both use HDMI, if a TV works for a console it'll work for a computer.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

my shot at least at it, couldn't skimp on the PSU, you could grab a keyboard and mouse from a used store nearby for about 10$, and bare in mind the amount you can save over a console when it comes to games and such. which maybe enough for a windows 7 copy from hardware swap or such.

Destroyer? No.

Better than a console? Yes.

Reasonable price? Yes, depending if the user has a mouse, keyboard, and monitor.

I agree. When you budget in the ballpark of $300 to $500 you're going to be on par with their level of graphics except you'll be able to play at 1080p.

While over the life span of a console ~7 years you only pay for games and service, the only flaw to this is when an upgrade becomes available you most likely will not be able to use your old games on that new platform. For the most part on PC/Computer you'll never have this problem, as you upgrade you can still play those games that you've gotten many years ago.

Consoles do sound like a bargain at time of purchase and to be fair they sort of are. Except if you want to upgrade later on you won't be able to use your old games on that new platform most likely.

I do wish AMD had their own version of the Nvidia Shield Console and GameStream but I'm sure Nvidia patented or registered that idea in some shape or form. Though if you get an Nvidia GPU and the Shield console and run it over Ethernet you'll sort of save some money. (I'm not sure an Nvidia GPU is worth the additional cost for gamestream especially since AMD has better price/performance)

I know that the X4 860K is not meant for something that cost this much but you're getting a mediocre system for playing current games at 1080p and medium settings with about 60fps or ultra with about 30fps. I also know that someone might not be able to afford that price, of course you could go with cheaper stuff or remove quality. A Samsung SSD will have better QC and performance over a cheaper SSD also going with an SSD will make certain aspects of the computer faster. The monitor you could go for a cheaper monitor but the Dell U2414H looks nice and that's worth something. The PSU is important and Fully modular will help with keeping the inside tidy.

PC games are generally cheaper and Steam sales help a lot. The cooler will help get a modest overclock, the case too is more sturdier than like a $30 case.

I'm hearing a lot of people trashing this thread with claims that you can't crush a console for $400. Really? We're going down that route again? I guess Fox Loli McNii-Chan is gonna have to wiggle her ears a bit here.

If you're really that strapped for cash, go the Scrapyard wars route.

Core 2 Quad Q6600 - ~$20

Decent 775 motherboard - ~$50

Used 7870 - ~$100

Decent 80+B 500W PSU - ~$40

Decent case - ~$40

8GB DDR2 800 - ~$30

1TB hard drives are about as close to a dime a dozen than they have ever been. ~$50.

Upgrade with parts as you see fit down the road. The first I would recommend is a better cooler for the CPU like a Hyper 212. The next is an SSD.

Obviously you're not going to get much in the way of warranties apart from the case and power supply, but those are the real important bits because they protect your stuff. With most of it you'll be covered by an Ebay guarantee or something along those lines.

The Q6600 can handle a 7870 just fine. For $20 or less, it's a steal. I would buy loads and loads of those things. You'll be playing pretty much any game you want at high textures at 1080p with minimal or no filters at higher than 45fps with no problem. The consoles won't be able to touch you. And you can add more stuff down the road as you see fit, all sorts of amazing shit that you could never dream of doing or having on a console.

And if you're skimping this much and you want an OS - the Windows 10 beta is free and doesn't expire anymore. Pretty much all the bugs have been ironed out. it's freaking perfect. Now you don't have to rely on LInux (because heaven knows you don't want to do that. No way in hell. not before it gets binary compatibility with other operating systems). No, it's not an editing workstation. No, it doesn't have hyperthreading or DDR3. No, it's not going to stack up against modern gaming PCs. Yes, it does have PCI and freaking IDE. But you can overclock it if you see fit through the FSB and trust me it is a hell of a lot more of a machine than even most of the stuff retailers are currently selling for the same price. I love old 775 machines like these. I'd build them in my spare time if people let me buy all the stuff. They are still excellent machines for what the average joe needs and even for what a start-out budget PC gamer wants for his console killer.

and the best part is, you can spend the money you saved on a ton of Steam Sale games. Have fun and praise Gaben!

oh and for all the shitsayers who are inevitably going to trash my suggestion as ridiculous, come at me. It's all part and parcel of having a cheap but kickass rig.
