L stands for Low (aka Low Gear) which is useful for when you're pulling something like a trailer and need extra power, or are going over rough/loose terrain.

No clue about the I though.

And don't make the mistake this guy "made" lol (the video is a joke, I know)

L = Low/first gear, locks the car in first gear

Not sure what I is but my guess, judging by the way it's positioned, I assume it locks the car in second gear or it's sports gearing/mode/whatever (longer time between shifts). If it locks it in second then it probably stands for incline. The owner's manual is your friend.

INTERMEDIATE (I): This position is also used for normal driving. However, it reduces vehicle speed without using your brakes for slight downgrades where the vehicle would otherwise accelerate due to steepness of grade. If constant upshifting or downshifting occurs while driving up steep hills, this position can be used to prevent repetitive types of shifts. You might choose INTERMEDIATE (I) instead of DRIVE (D) when driving on hilly, winding roads and when towing a trailer, so that there is less shifting between gears.

ie: Engine braking

Manuals are a thing you know.

Manuals may be more enjoyable to drive while going for a drive for fun, but if you drive through city stop-and-go traffic, manuals are a pain in the ass. Some people just want a car that is easy to drive.

Nice part about my 2000 chrysler 300m, I've got the regular automatic drive mode, then a sort of semi-automatic sport mode :P

So I can drive it in auto if I'm feeling lazy or whatever, and then if I want to have some fun I can pop it into semi-auto.

Automatics are quite popular here, yes, but they're basically always an optional upgrade.

The base model in almost any new car is Manual. I had to pay extra for my automatic transmission in my new car.

There's plenty of choice for those who open their eyes and look.

Oh my Jetta has the same thing. "Automatic manual" mode. You can down/up-shift and control the gear.

Sure it's not as responsive or as sporty as a true manual gearbox, but it's really nice to have that flexibility.

My car has normal Drive, Automatic Manual, and Sport mode. Sport mode in my car is completely automatic, but the engine revs a lot higher and doesn't limit itself for fuel efficiency.

I'm guessing I is for "intermediate" and L is for Low.

You only need to worry about them on an automatic when going down a steep curvy road, or rarely when hauling something heavy, even in that situation all you need to do is turn off overdrive.

Some older cars, had an S instead of an I, which stood for "super" gear, which was the gear you could shift down to in order to pass someone.

Any ordinary driving, just put it in D and go. Which is the nice thing about automatics, not having to muck about in 99% of your daily driving with gears and an obnoxious clutch.

I don't mind manuals, but 99% of the time they're pointless and less efficient.  You don't need them unless you're going down an extremely steep grade that's curvey (I know this from experience, as I've boiled brake calipers in the blue ridge mountains of virginia, on a 3000gt automatic, despite driving in the lowest gear), or hauling something heavy, or racing.

Not to mention that for most drivers, there is absolutely no point in owning a manual.

on the chevy equinox shifter what does the "I" and the "L" mean and what do they do?

"I" means "2" on your non-Chevy shifter, L is L (low gear, not the one in my profile pic)

L only allows the car to stay in first gear, I only allows it to use first or second

True. Being stuck in rush hour traffic in a manual is basically the first level of hell. Sure, there are worse fates, but it's annoying as fuck.

I am actively waiting for the hatred from the car fanatics (and granted, I am a car guy) for liking automatics over manuals.

True. Being stuck in rush hour traffic in a manual is basically the first level of hell. Sure, there are worse fates, but it's annoying as fuck.

Just driving one long distance is hell for me. Granted my only experience with driving a manual long distance was in a 60's-70's light chevy pickup, which I'm guessing used a leaf spring off of a semi-truck for the clutch spring. So bad that it gave my left knee arthritis.

And this was off of a two way, 4 hour each way, trip. Mostly high-way with no traffic.

I just don't get the point. I drove an automatic 1995 3000gt non-turbo for 6 years, and I beat more than a few modified mustangs in both rolling starts and off the line at the light. Most of the time, people driving manuals in a race, can't fucking drive to begin with, and spin out rather than taking off. While my 3000gt  couldn't do a burnout, what it could do was take off from a dead stop, as well as downshifting more vigorously depending on how hard you mashed the gas pedal.
