Morning Folks,

I have been wondering, for a while now, how good is Windows Defender (Win 8 & up)?

I am a long time user of Kaspersky Total Security (aka Pure) and well $14 for a 365day pass is hard to pass up.

I am keen to know what virus protection you guys use. Does Windows Defender protect you enough, or do you run free or paid software.

Keen to find out.

Aaron

Windows Defender. I could probably get away with nothing if it didn't come preinstalled.

Been using the program since its inception when you had to pay for it (Windows Live One Care, first year only) Loved it, never turned back and has yet to let me down. Stopped many a trojan and virus attacks. It has since become what it is now, windows defender absolutely great software. Runs quietly in the back ground and you never be bothered by it unless it tells you it stopped an attack.

Works as advertised.

I rely on their monthly Malicious Software Removal Tool via windows update. Antivirus programs are a waste of usable performance in my opinion unless you download executable files regularly. Sandboxie is quite useful however

Windows Defender is pretty decent as far as free goes, better than AVG in my experiance.  Avast is a bit better, but eats system resources.  Ive never trusted Norton, Kaspersky, or BitDefender. Comodo is another one Ive used, and its actually really good, especially when you can get their paid version really cheap (i had 2 computers for a year, for $10) come with live desktop support and their own version of Chrome.

Personally i use the paid version of Nod32, simple UI, doesnt hog your systems, sits quietly in the background doing its thing, catching everything. Ive never even had problems with false positives (with expection of things like Cain&Abel and other tools that EVERYTHING flags).

there are so many different anti-virus programs to choose from, honestly find one that suits you, and then download malwarebytes to go along with it.

If you visit virus.com to get your daily dose of daily viruses, then Windows defender isn't good.

Windows defender is a light weight anti-virus. It is non intrusive and and doesn't affect system performance, and scans the system quickly. However, the cost of this, is that it is not very good. It will definitely catch what is popular, but that is about it. It won't go thorough multiple heuristics, and won't have it's algorithms changed every now and then to avoid having viruses that find a weakness in the detection system and pass undetected.

It is good if you want maximum system performance, but you use very safe web surfing practices. And you use something else, every now and then, just to make you sure didn't get something from a compromised trusted site or source of download.

Microsoft doesn't aim Windows Defender as being the best A/V and anti-malware tool out there. Microsoft wants SOMETHING for the millions of people running expired licenses of their paying A/V software that came with their system.

If you are in a business environment, or you are susceptible of getting a lot of viruses, then I would suggest almost any popular A/V solution. They affect between somewhat to a lot your system performance, usually, the ones that affects your system the most are the better, but that is not necessarily true, but I think it is a general rule to start filtering out solution to help you pick the best for your needs.

Plus Chrome does a good  job of chatching sites that are no good

and if you have to buy one i would rec mbam i have the full version on my sisters computer, cause shes she prone to getting virusses somehow lmao. and it works well.
