290x cf would perform better but would consume a sea of power and be really hot, without the right cooling solution I wouldn't do this, maybe get two 970's? but 1 980ti will be great right now

Always one beter card vs two lesser cards so then the fury x vs 980ti which the fury x is better with so fury x

he'd be better off going with 2 R9 390s because they are cheaper but at least as strong as the 290x (8gb), wouln't he? Maybe sapphire ones, seem to be the coolest for me.

If you already have a 290X then get another one for CF (or a 390X, you can crossfire them because they're the same card). Otherwise get a 980 Ti
