I just went to see the newest Terminator movie and I couldn't help but think of the count down to release of Windows 10.  Could this be the roll out of a super advanced AI that will ultimately lead to Judgment Day!? OK, probably not, but perhaps a sinister plot that gives would-be tyrants a backdoor to everyone's PC?  Does seem suspicious that they are giving it away for free.

Or they want to have a good customer experience? I mean, it would have been £99.99 for me. I'd rather get it for free than have to spend that.

What do they know of England, who only England know?

"Well that's what I always said I wanted to be remembered for, for being honest. Nothing else is worth a damn"

Google is more so Skynet rather than Microsoft releasing Windows 10.

Knowing how much information flows through their servers, they could probably build a sickly A.I. system.

They also acquired several robotic companies last years...

Isn't apple giving the OS away for "free" for years?

Yes, but only if you buy their hardware to begin with which is such a ripoff it doesn't matter.

no free win10 icon on my pc, build it less then one month ago and updated everything that was required/recommanded by windows, maybe my system is to new to apply for the update and it needs to go through the process first.

against the time your hardware isn't supported anymore you got the money out of it OS wise, a mac gets updated for roughly 5y when released and it seems like their phones are going the same way considering the fact that the 4s is getting IOS 9 this year and got released in 2011/2012

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

That's a very good point.  Also, Google has been investing heavily in AI research for years!  Also, according to documents leaked by Snowden, Google has effectively been deputized by the NSA.  So I guess Google = Skynet.

why the hell am i a fanboy? it's just a fact that apple keeps their stuff supported for a long time even on older systems.

hell this is the first time windows is giving its OS free to existing users, it just makes freaking sense that apple charges extra for longer support.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

I would definitely disagree with the statement that Apple supports systems for a longer time considering the latest iOS can only be installed on phones at most 4 years old and the oldest system El Capitan Supports according to beta is 2007. Microsoft barely releases OS's in that time frame let alone doesn't support them. Even Windows 10 is expected to have a 32 bit version while all G4 support was dropped with Snow Leopard. The free consumer OS is an interesting concept, especially since there is a limited time frame for this and only pertains to home/personal use users. I'm more curious if I will be receiving Pro versions of Windows 10 or if they will be downgrading me to Home. Either way the topic of the discussion has been horribly derailed.

I'd disagree. As I've said before, Microsoft supports literally any hodge-podge of components that will run Windows, no matter how old they are. The only reason their updates aren't free is because Microsoft is a software company and that's where they get most of their revenue from, whereas apple is both,  and makes way more money than they should on their hardware, allowing them to support their software side easily and thus give out these free updates. I really have no idea how Microsoft is going to make a profit off of Windows. My guess would be a subscription service after a year, such as seen on office 365
