Gaming CPU needed?

this is my currently build i have now...

 

   i7 950 intel CPU

 -Evga G2  Power supply
- ASUS 6970
- MSI lightning 6970
-16GB Corsair vengeance ram 2 (2X4GB) + 2(X4)
-MSI X58-65A Mobo
- Cooler master 690 casing

 

 

Is my build outdated

Somewhat but still ok. Maybe a GPU and SSD for an upgrade.

 

If building new, go Intel.

given 1st gen was way inferior to the 2nd gen, i7 as still a good one, so it's ok as of now. if you need to , get an 4790k in the future.

CPU should still do well and GPU is quite outdated.

Kind of outdated.. But still works and would only upgrade in a year or so (with the new Intel CPU's)

Assuming gaming, yea it's a bit on the dated side. The 6970 performs a bit like an R9 270 and the 950 is quite slow without an overclock.

 

I'd just upgrade to an i5 4460/Xeon 1231V3 and an R9 380 or similar. You can keep the RAM, cooling and all that.

 

Might be worth throwing an SSD in as well.

I would say it depends on what you use it for?

For many things an i7 950 is still perfectly adequate. Depending on what you use the

machine for, upgrading the GPU might be a more worthwile investment (or, as said, an

SSD). I still use an LGA1366 rig (albeit with GK110-based GPUs) and I don't intend to

upgrade to LGA2011 or 1150 any time soon. It is a dual-socket system used for heavily

multi-threaded stuff, so it'll do just fine for quite a while yet.

CPU is fine for now, GPU needs upgrade. i7 950 can handle R7 270/370 or R9 285/380, R9 290/390 may be a bit too much for it.
