FEZ II cancelled

So Phil Fish, creator of FEZ, got into a heated argument over Twitter with Marcus Beer (@AnnoyedGamer) over some harsh remarks Beer made towards Fish and Jonathan Blow on Game Trailer's Invisible Walls. Beer called Phil and Jonathan "hipsters" and "tosspots" while giving them the combined nickname "BlowFish", and saying that their games weren't even that good after the two designers refused to make a comment to the media about Xbox One's reversal of indie game self publishing. "Gents...You were the guys who did Indie Game: the Movie, and some of you looked relatively normal in it, one of you looked like a total tosspot in it. But you can't have it both ways. You're successful game designers...you're 'indie' game designers...hurray, good for you, you fucking hipsters."

 

The whole thing ended with Fish saying that he's leaving the industry, and that FEZ II is cancelled, followed by Fish switching his twitter to private.

 

Personally, I think Phil reacted a little harshly, but I feel like he was in the right. His image was being attacked, and Marcus Beer acted like Phil and Jonathan were obligated to make a remark about a rumor on the Xbox One indie self publishing when they don't need to. They're probably tired of being the face of indie games, and probably feel like they should be treated like their own persons rather than figure heads for indies.

In the link provided, they managed to screencap most of Fish's responses before they were removed from public viewing.

He created trouble just before the release of Fez on the steam forums to attract attention to Fez so he sells more copies. Didn't really like Fez anyway but it did look good.

I have never heard of fez to start with but it seems in the twitter images it went from "we're not going anywhere" to fez 2 is canceled in less then 2 hours if i read that right so i don't think i will miss a game that can be canceled in under 2 hours because people were being mean on the internet.

Something i learned a LONG time go (when i was in English class in High School) .. is that when you communicate anything you communicate it to an AUDIENCE.

You dont read your 3 month old baby quantum mechanics books, neither does a 33 year old son read a Dr Seus book to their father. Whats the point? Its the wrong audience. Sure there are some good Japanese games which western audiences like, but in the true sense of "Audience", Japanese games only appeal to japanese players because that is who the games designers aim for as their audience. Some good examples: (as they said Street Fighter, mario), ninja gaiden, ni no kuni, metal gear solid.

Theres nothing to say western audiences should not play japanese games... and vice versa. However there is a communication breakdown due to difference is Eastern / Western cultures. Its kind of sad Phil Fish doesnt really understand this. The 2nd guy on the panel who spoke got close to this realisation, but didnt follow through. You can bet he played the shit out of Zelda 1 and 2 when he was a kid (like i did when i was 10)... but the question was about current japanese games. I myself dont play any new japanese games as they dont appeal to me. If however you told me that Skyrim was made by a japanese company, i simply wouldnt believe you! Japanese games have a style all their own, much more kid-friendly, silly, quirky and addictive in that way. Again, is Phil Fish 8 years old? Nope. Is Phil Fish japanese? No again! He isnt anywhere near the demographic that japanese game designers are aiming for. The japanese gamer's question was a long shot... but holy crap! Saying "They're shit, dude" is increadibly offensive, particularly to a Japanese person, who has a very polite culture.. and certaintly didnt deserve it.

The diplomatic answer is "we dont have any current gen japanese infulences in our games" ... not "they're shit"! wow!

Cliff Bleszinski, from Gears of War, reached out on his blog to try and lure Fish back into the gaming scene. Interesting update.
