Zotac 780 AMP Edition's fans behaving weirdly

Hello.

So, for some unreasonable reason, fans on my Zotac 780 start to ramp up for a period of time, and then they go back to normal, as seen here: http://imgur.com/16ljK2w

It is really annoying, especially when watching a movie or gaming, so I'm looking for a fix for it. Anyone knows what might cause this? I've checked all the pins on the cooler/card, they are all fine.

that's flippin' weird.

Umm maybe try to take the gpu out of the pc and clean everything fan related as good as you can, clean the plugs and everything.

I always do that as soon as this thing starts happening (if it lasts for more than 5 minutes, and sometimes it does), and well, it fixes it. Rebooting without cleaning it doesn't help though.

Try to send it RMA.

It's clearly not working as it should. I think the chip that takes care of the fan is faulty. Never saw one failing before but everything can break :P

Hopefully Zotac will recognize the problem and fix it.

omg, let's rescue this thread.

 

What are the temps of the card during that speed increase? Maybe the card is just heating up and trying to cool it with a short ramp up of the fans.

 

Also: do you have a custom fan curve on your GPU? If not, maybe the stock fan control is going up in steps. So temperatures might reach into a new fan speed step and the card therefore ramps up.

 

The solution would be to design a custom fan curve in MSI Afterburner. (settings). Something like a flat curve until ~ 60 °C/ 30-40% fanspeed and then a smooth raise to 85 °C/ 100% would be good.
