Refresh Rate? Response Time?

Hours and hours of fourm browsing, and monitor shopping. I can not get a straight answer. What really matters? Some say it is the Response Time, and some say the Response Time means nothing and its all abou the Refresh Rate. I am here to ask what really matters.

 

There are a ton of monitors out there that I am considering for my 2-3 monitor setup. But I can not make a decision on which I can never find a concrete answer. I am mainly a CS:GO player (FPS).

 

What do I realy want? Low refresh, low response time, or both?

 

Lets take the  ASUS ROG PG278Q:

 

Newegg states that it has:

 

Response Time: 1ms

Refresh Rate: 144hz

 

So what really matters?

 

(I know I have made a previous post containg almost the same material and question, but I wanted to restart the thread to obtain a more clear answer.)

Both are important for CSGO.

CS:GO is more about reaction times since it's an FPS game. A lower response latency is key. Although, one millisecond isn't really necessary... Of course, you also want decent framerates, too, so...

Refresh rate gives you the FPS that the monitor is actually able to display while response time is how long it takes a pixel to change color.

since I am getting two, what would you recommend? I was looking at a 1ms 60hz monitor for about 160$ by asus... would you increas the refresh rate?

Honestly 5ms and below are beyond fast, normal human reaction time when heavily concentrated can be at the fastest around 100ms.

The refresh rate is the amount of times per second a new image will show on the monitor, measured in hertz, or hz. 60hz is plenty for most users, and to be honest if you have never used a 144hz monitor before you will NOT notice the difference between the two.

Response time is the amount of time it takes for the monitor to process the image once it has received it from the graphics card. Pretty much anything about 5ms or under will be amazing.

When buying a monitor, also take into account IPS. This vastly improves how colours look on the screen, and is worth the little more cash for it.

if you have never used a 144hz monitor before you will NOT notice the difference between the two.

 

The difference is significant.

Yes it is, but I was looking for a thinner bezel for multi monitors...

 

Well, the next closest for 144hz is $250 so I doubt that route is very viable.

Go for a higher refresh rate, but make sure your latency doesn't stay above 7 ms.

I personally would prefer 144hz mainly because it creates a much smoother and 'snappier' feel. Response times are so incredibly fast that there isn't really any difference between 1ms, 2ms, or 5ms. Also that monitor has a very similar width bezel as the one I posted so I see no reasoning behind getting it if you are after a thin bezel.

 

EDIT: Yea that is definitely a thin bezel. Other than that, it's a pretty typical 1080p display.

Both are obviously fairly important. I do own a 144hz/1ms monitor, but I don't think 5ms is that bad. I almost require 144hz in a monitor though, which is unfortunately the reason why I'm sticking away from 4K, as much as I want to try 4K :(

Higher refresh rate is more important than response time.

 

A high response time increases motion blur, but response time numbers don't really represent the actual response time so they're fairly useless. Contrary to popular belief, response time is not latency, it is not the delay between pressing a button and seeing it happen on the screen.
