after a certain point, the more power you add to the signal, the more distortion you get, in effect preventing a longer reach. Qualcomm Institute removes this power limit, which in turn extends how far signals can travel in optical fiber without needing a repeater. Repeaters are electronic regenerators. These regenerators are effectively supercomputers and must be applied to each channel in the transmission. The electronic regeneration in modern lightwave transmission that carries between 80 to 200 channels also dictates the cost and, more importantly, prevents the construction of a transparent optical network. As a result, eliminating periodic electronic regeneration will drastically change the economy of the network infrastructure, ultimately leading to cheaper and more efficient transmission of information.
In lab experiments, the researchers at UC San Diego successfully deciphered information after it travelled a record-breaking 12,000 kilometers through fiber optic cables with standard amplifiers and no repeaters.

Pffff. ISPs don't care about customers. Take a look at Time Warner randomly shutting of internet and Comcast demanding to know why a customer is leaving their service. Also after the whole Net Neutrality thing my internet bill has just kept going up.

Pffff. ISPs don't care about customers. Take a look at Time Warner randomly shutting of internet and Comcast demanding to know why a customer is leaving their service. Also after the whole Net Neutrality thing my internet bill has just kept going up.

I'm switching to time warner.. Sadly but anything is better then WindStream. I don't know about AT&T Internet. They've got optic fiber and it's slowly coming towards my city.

My parents are on 8mb/s it's not that bad, of course it's annoying if more than one person uses it at a single time, but atleast it's stable and works all the time.

 

And there is a plan on DSL you can actually buy internet on DSL without having a phone, real breakthrough.

It's anywhere from $100-$150 depending if you bundle stuff with it and it's gigabyte Internet

Pffff. ISPs don't care about customers. Take a look at Time Warner randomly shutting of internet and Comcast demanding to know why a customer is leaving their service. Also after the whole Net Neutrality thing my internet bill has just kept going up.

We have 10mibt DSL but we also have 2 TVs which work trough internet... ISP says that one TV needs 4mbits, but really its not that bad but still...And thankfully Im the only one in the house who uses the internet heavily but still would love to have faster net to download stuff faster.
