The latest UK broadband report from Which magazine has slammed BT, Plusnet, TalkTalk, and other British ISPs for failing to deliver the "up to" speeds that are advertised on their websites. BT and Plusnet were two of the most egregious offenders: for their "up to" 76Mbps Internet access package, only 1 percent of customers actually got the advertised speed. Virgin Media, you might be unsurprised to learn, put in a much better showing than the other mainstream ISPs: 98 percent of Virgin customers got the advertised speed.

In lithuania you have 3 isps to choose from in one place so they do deliver speeds as advertised. But that 99% requirement is also quite misleading... 95% would be more reliable data.

Surprisingly, I moved from an Urban area to a rural area very recently, and my speeds have gone from 17/5 to capping out a 40/10 plan, with the line supporting around 70/30 if I upgrade. 

 

I'd like to switch to virgin, but the coverage isn't great.

I have a 1.5gbps net, but it's always like 0.7 gbps due to my neighbours, especially at the weekend.

They do realise the adverts say up to xxxMb and your told exactly what you will get when you sign up. BT got in trouble for advertising speeds they couldn't supply in the past and the govt made all ISPs give exact speeds at the point of sale to combat it and make it fairer for consumers.

In that regards I could advertise an up to 1Gbps  speed and give you 1 Megabit per second and that technically would not be false advertising.  The real truth with up speeds is they can give you whatever and you have to take it.

In The Netherlands, all providers cover all area so they need to do quite a bit of ball sucking to get customers, one ISP (Ziggo) actually increased their speeds by like 20mb/s free of charge. You also get stuff like a tablet when you sign up for a contract.

yup. same thing in lithuania. I was paying 10 eur for 50/50 and got increased to 100/100 for free, just because other isp's started offering 100 at that cost and they don't want people to switch.

Not quite. You can only advertise upto your networks maximum speed but as long as your giving one customer 1Gbps you can advertise it as up to 1Gbps. The small print on the ad will have to clearly say your exact speed will be determined during the sale though and you have to tell the customer how fast before they agree to buy from you.

I was told I'd get 1.5Mb/s... and I get about 1.25-1.5Mb/s on a good day. The line I'm running on originates from a highway that's about a mile away, and I'm at the end of it, lol...

im on bt infinity getting the full 80 down 20 up with a max attainable of 85 down 25 up, im only getting the full speed because i complained something wasn't right with the router as it kept dropping connection (stupid homehub 5 issues, now using modem aswell). they had to change my pair at the cabinet and connection the the pole and it went from 55 down all the way to 80 down. bt were on watchdogs for lying to people on what speeds they could get, they were told to make amends to their speed estimates as some woman got 8mbps from the 40 quoted because of distance from the cabinet, its a joke. moving to virgin media due to getting charged more than we should be (stay well away from bt and plusnet).

 

speedtest shows me a max of 75 down 16 up.

We pay for 38Mb with EE, my Steam downloads cruise along at 32Mb but peaks at about 36-37Mb. I can't complain too much I guess.

screw you my dads is less than 100 ft away and by using an unlocked modem to see what he can actually get made me sad (around 125 down and around 35 up).

I can't remember exactly as I don't pay the bills but I believe it's something like £30-35 for unlimited internet at that speed with a landline phone package. It was pretty much the best deal available when fibre came to my village last year. + we had been on EE/Orange internet for years without any issues and have continued to have no problems.

if thats including phoneline its not too bad, but if its £35 just for the internet thats bad.

VM have always been spot on for me in the UK, always get my advertised speed.
