FX-6300 vs. Pentium G3258

Which one is better? They're both the same price with a motherboard.  I know that the pentium can be a pretty good overclocker but the 6300 has more cores.  CPUBoss says that the pentium is better but on their testing also says that the 6300 has better performance.  How much of a performance gain can you get from overclocking the pentium.  I would also put the best overclock I could get on the 6300

fx 6300 is better than pentium. i3 is better than fx 6300.

I also highly doubt they are both the same price.

-snip-

Eh... I wouldn't recommend the Pentium because it's dual core and many games are supporting more cores now (or don't work on dual cores at all..

But the FX 6300.. It's alright I guess, but you are limiting your upgrade path and it also doesn't get the highest fps always.. (Thanks to its less than optimal per core performance).

How much would an i3 4160/4170 cost compared to those CPU's? (It's a non overclocking chip, so you don't have to get a really expensive motherboard)

fx6300>i3>g3258

Why?

in what world.

For single threaded tasks: Pentium

For multi threaded tasks: 6300

Basically, the Pentium has stronger cores, but only 2(no HT even), while the 6300 has more weaker cores. Depending on your task will decide which one is better. In my testing, the Pentium was good for gaming and easy general tasks, while the 6300 is good for everything but gaming(with better multi tasking performance). They are both great overclockers, assuming you get good chips.

... so? That is the worst comparison I have ever seen

Gaming performance > cores

6300 is better than pentium sure. Not better than i3, because i3 has 2 cores + HT and it outperforms 6300 in most modern games, even after you OC 6300.

technically it only has 3 cores. its kinda like intels hyperthreading but they are recognized as separate cores

ive been looking at this http://techreport.com/review/26735/overclocking-intel-pentium-g3258-anniversary-edition-processor/3and it seems like an overclocked g3258 competes with the fx8350 when its overclocked. and I know that the 6300 doesnt compete with the 8350 even when overclocked

it's not recommended to buy a pentium anymore. most new games don't even run on 2 cores. You need to get an i3 or higher.

also there is no way i3+h81 mobo is more expensive than 6300.

FX-6300 is better then the G3258. now FX-6300 vs a i3 or i5 is dependent on what your using the computer for. Gaming i3-4160(4170) is better. If your doing work like video editing then the FX-6300 is the way to go.

or should i just spend like $20 more and get an 8320.  Im trying to build a small form factor pc.  and was kinda leaning towards the pentium because then i could do ITX.  but doing micro atx isnt that big of a deal because I already have a prodigy m that I could just use.

there are no microatx mobos I would recommend putting a 8320 in. WHY CAN'T YOU BUY AN i3?

honestly, im probably going to be doing a little bit of everything with this. I already have my other pc that i use most of the time. but i want something small that is portable.

I had a gigabyte ga-78lmt-usb3 that worked perfect for the time that I had it. And i even had a slight overclock on it. I know the power phase for the cpu isnt the greatest. but .

and i would still want to overclock, because thats just how i am xD, so i wouldnt want to buy an i3 with a B or H socket mobo

GO with the i3 then. better Frame rate stability in games and runs colder because of the lower TDP, lowering fan noise on ITX builds.

eh. You can almost afford an i5+h81 for the price of 8320 and mobo. an i5 without overclock completely smashes all fx processors.

that's impossible. unless that i5 is sandy locked and 3770 is running without a cooler.

where do you get a mobo for a negative amount of money?
