Will this work?

Go to solution Solved by KamiKatze,

It does seem to be very much.. Liquid still?

Should I just go to a pharmacy some time to get 99% isopropyl alcohol?

Acetone is even better, just don't get any on the PCB. :D Yes, liquid.

Will this stuff be able to clean off thermal paste of a CPU:

vNA5riJ.jpg

70% (cleaning/disinfecting?) alchohol?

If not, where can you find some (cheap) isopropyl 99% alcohol?

Also, what kind of cloth should be used for cleaning a CPU?

70% isorpropyl is okay but make sure it's isn't ethanol ( I think the name of the other type ).

Chemist here. It will work fine, It jsut won't evaporate off as easily because it's 30% water, so get ready your coffee filters. ;)

Isopropyl alcohol is usually obtainable in pharmacies but also on amazon in litre bottles. :D

who cares...

90-99% only would think ( but his should be ok ),

you can get some at the pharmacy.

I've used 70% Isopropyl alcohol and it got off hard thermal paste just fine.

Yes, Ethanol is the name of the other type. It is indeed what he has, because his is denatured, so you can't drink it anymore. Ethanol will work just fine though. ;)

I've read that it leaves gunk behind and doesn't clean well and evaporation temp is higher the isopropyl.

Cool, thanks for all the quick responses :)

Just a question, this stuff expired in 2001 (but it has never been opened), will this be a problem or did they just add an expiration date on it, because they have to??

Are those PS controllers i see in the background?! HEATHEN! /s :P

Actually it's a PS3 controller and a GameCube controller.

Yes, it does expire. It oxidizes into acetone eventually.

Ethanol evaporates at 79°C, isoprop at 82 °C (i have to admit, i just googled that :D ). I can't guess why it should leave stains, it's very volatile compared to water.

Acetone can exist in the form of a liquid.

That stuff would probably work, but I wouldn't use it. I picked up a pint of 91% isopropyl alcohol at Walgreens a few weeks ago for $2 and some change. That should be good enough as long as you don't apply power five seconds later. A paper towel is fine to clean the old stuff off, but you can use good quality q-tips for hard-to-reach corners and such.

I used 70% alcohol to clean a CPU and it died instantly. Never worked again. Get 99% alcohol to be safe
