I would just say go for a CPU GPU combo.

Leaves room to upgrade too

 

For a HTPC? Could work I guess

uhm no it's not? It's only good if you plan to use some kind of mini itx case which has no room for any gpu whatsoever.

Just bought one. I went to microcenter and for 130 bucks they included a MSI A68hm MB for free if i do the mail in rebate otherwise its 10 bucks.

You also get a descent cooler compared to the 7850k. Sub 300 dollar build it is unbeatable. 350 or above I would go with fx-6300 or 83xx and a the best grapics card you can get. 

The cooler that comes with the 7870k is on the right and the middle one came with the 7850k.

I personally would never buy a two core when even a raspberry pi 2 has 4 cores.

Jayztwocents and annadtech, NCIX have a llot of info on these apu's

For the FX-xxxx and dGPU route Cult of mush and teksyndicate have some great info on there respective youtube channels
