if you can wait, always wait.  even if pascal is a POS, 980ti will probably se a price-drop

You can go 1440p with a 970 or a R9-290X, the 290X will do better at 1440p I think. But the 980 beats them both but not in value.

24 fps for that "cinematic" feel

After a couple weeks of behavioral sciences at my school I can easily conclude my parents need to grow up.

I'm considering that, but I was gonna get an X-Star monitor and "overclock" it to about 90-100Hz and I want something that can consistently hit that mark

But if you want... the monoprice 4K monitor is only $400 and if you get that now and pascal later so you can 4K!!!

I would wait for Pascal personally. At the very least, you'll see a nice price-drop in current gen GPUs which will still run 1440p no problem.

so theirs a new gpu from nvidia coming out again? or is pascal the amd one? im having a hard time following all these damn gpus.....

Pascal is Nvidia's next lineup, with Volta to follow. At least according to Nvidia's own roadmaps.

I don't do signatures.

Pascal will be Nvidia's next generation architecture. Supposedly launching sometime in (late?) 2016 if I remember the rumors correctly.

/So far all I've seen is the standard next-generation rumors. "10x more performance per watt", "gallons more technologies", "support for features you've never heard of" etc. What will  actually come out as a completed consumer product, on the other hand, is still up in the air.

If you can wait, wait. If not, then buy now.

I honestly doubt the performance difference will be beyond 10-20%.

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

Do you need (or really want) a new GPU now? If yes, buy what you can now. If no, then wait. :)

1080p is proving a lot more jaggy than I had expected, so I was looking for an upgrade in resolution more than anything, but my current gpu will not cut it.

But if you want... the monoprice 4K monitor is only $400 and if you get that now and pascal later so you can 4K!!!

The link's not working for me?

Ok these worked somehow... Anyways, I am intrigued, but 1440p seems to strike the balance I want between visuals and framerates. Thanks for the heads up though!

Well, while the R9-285 is definitely a midrange card, it isn't really incapable of running games (even heavy ones) at 1440p. Yes, you may be forced to turn settings down to achieve 60 and higher FPS, but in my opinion the difference between Medium and Ultra can be less important than the difference between 1080p and 1440p (though of course that depends on your personal preferences and the games in question).

In lighter games, an R9-285 should have absolutely no trouble running well over 60 FPS at 1440p. I've found that even though I have a fairly powerful rig and a few new AAA games to go with it, I spend most of my time playing things like Insurgency, which definitely doesn't need all the power.

I'd grab the monitor first. If you find that you're forced to turn too many games to unacceptably low settings (in your opinion), then the GPU upgrade can be done to fix that. I wouldn't recommend spending $650 on a 980TI only to find that you would have been just fine with the 285.

As for jaggies: Anti-aliasing can help a bit.

If its 1440p and you are ready to upgrade NOW, then the 980 ti should suffice. If you are patient and have something that can hold you over in the meantime, pascal could be out as early as q1 2016 and seems like it would probably be powerful enough you could skip 1440p and go right to 4k.

The 980ti makes zero sense for 4k with pascal around the corner unless you have gobs of cash and a pretty stout PSU and a case or watercooling set up that will handle the heat of SLI for these power hungry and hot running cards. Pascal will probably make the 28nm 980 ti seem like a dinosaur with the superior performance and power efficiency a 16nm process can produce.
