It can be damaged quite a bit, but all my old HDD's still work.

 HDD can't be damaged much?

'Course it can, it is probably the most delicate thing in any set-up.

I wouldn't use a second hand HDD unless it was for fairly so-so data.

But then I am of the every HDD will fail sooner rather than later school

You can never trust what data gets left on a secondhand drive. If you're selling you can't trust that the data is wiped completely clean (yes I know there's programs that mimic a DOD (that's department of defence)overwrite, but I don't trust them to wipe data on "failed" sectors) If you're buying, there's always the chance that someone's left a nasty surprise on there that you don't know about.

Why?

Because a new HDD is already the least reliable component in a PC, a used one is even worse.

WD Green is extremely slow btw.

Agreed. WD Green is great for storage, doesn't heat up much either.

Also, HDD's depending on the series could die after 2 years. Usual death period is from 2-3 years, highest failure rate is in that period.

But as stated above, I have HDD's that are over 10 years old and work fine. :)

Although I wouldn't trust them with any sensitive data.

It's my understanding that the WD green drives are a lower speed, lower power drive designed for when speed of access isn't as important as the power drain involved. They also tend to be a bit quieter than the blacks as they don't spin as quick.

Mainly a good drive for non critical storage. I could also see them being used as mass storage in a HTPC build

HDD is one part I won't buy used, ever. Even if the used is $10 compared to a new one for $80, for example.

You never know whats left on it, you don't know what has happened to it before you bought (been dropped, bumped around, etc) and the life span on it could be ending.

I'd suggest buying new.
