AMD Dual-Core vs Quad-Core for Media Center/Home NAS?

Title says it all.

I want it to play Blu-Ray disc/files at 1080p

So is Dual fine or would Quad be better?

Specifically from these processors

Dual-Core

AMD A6-6400K

Quad-Core

AMD A8-5600K

AMD FX-4100

-Thank You

Dual core would be just fine, unless you plan on ripping any movies, rendering, or any other CPU intensive tasks that would go much faster with the extra cores.

Thank You both, I will go with the Quad, just in case I do plan on ripping.

Could I also add a question about memory.

Need requirements?

2/4/8GB?

I am thinking 4GB is perfect, dual channel, 1333mhz.

Yes for a media center 4GB is perfect. APU's benefit from higher frequency memory but since you're not gaming it won't make any difference, so again just like you said 4GB 1333MHz :P

Hello i am currently running a media server in my house with an old intel Atom, wth i believe 2GB of RAM, but a WD RED so instead of focusing in the CPU or RAM i would also consider a descent HDD. (i am not saying you shouldn't use the 4GB or the Quad core, but i can stream video no problems with that thing)

Right now I have a 3TB Seagate, but I will be upgrading to a 32GB SSD as my main drive and 2x4TB as the storage/backups

  • 4 weeks later...

A G1610 would be cheaper and would do what you need.

Here's my recommendation: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1sbEy

Any of those are fine.. Its the network connection to your client PC is what's important. I paid a guy to put a 1 GB connection between my server PC and client PC. Woot!

GamingPC: Intel 4770k CPU, 2xMSI 780 GTX Twin Frozr, 16 GB Corsair Vengeance Pro, Swiftech H220 CPU Cooler.
